Landslide on the Ma River bank causes danger to people in Trung Son commune

Thanh Hoa - People in Trung Son commune propose that functional agencies soon have a plan to prevent riverbank erosion on the Ma River.

On May 27, Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee said that voters in Trung Son commune had just sent a petition to the Provincial People's Committee, requesting consideration of establishing a project to protect the Ma River bank to ensure the safety of life and property for people living in the downstream area of Trung Son hydropower dam.

According to a report from Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, through actual inspection, the left bank of the Ma River section passing through Co Me residential area, Trung Son commune is showing many signs of serious landslides. Many locations of the riverbank have eroded vertically, deeply encroaching on residential areas and civil works. The preliminary cause was determined to be due to the river section having curves, the main flow close to the left bank, combined with extreme rain and flood events in recent years, including a major flood in 2025.

The latest statistics from the People's Committee of Trung Son commune show that this landslide phenomenon is causing a risk of directly affecting 39 households with 123 people.

To ensure immediate safety, at the actual inspection, the Sub-Department of Irrigation (Thanh Hoa Department of Agriculture and Environment) guided and requested local authorities to deploy emergency response measures. Accordingly, functional agencies requested to put up warning signs, cordon off areas, set up barriers at dangerous locations, and at the same time widely inform people to proactively prevent when floods occur.

In addition, the People's Committee of Trung Son commune is requested to review, adjust and supplement the disaster response plan for 2026 and the following years, focusing on preparation according to the "4 on-site" motto to evacuate and relocate people to safe places in a timely manner, and at the same time implement measures to limit the development of landslides.

In the long term, Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee directs Trung Son Commune People's Committee to coordinate with relevant units to conduct surveys and specifically assess the causes, scope and extent of landslides, thereby determining appropriate handling solutions. Based on balancing budget resources, Trung Son Commune People's Committee will report to the Provincial People's Committee (through the Department of Finance) to consider financial support if it exceeds the local financial capacity.

The incident on the left bank of the Ma River in Co Me village is a warning about the risk of landslides directly threatening the safety of people's lives and property, and at the same time emphasizes the necessity of riverbank protection projects and disaster prevention infrastructure in riverside residential areas.
