According to the project, merging Kien Giang province and An Giang province to a new province called An Giang province, the administrative and political center located in Rach Gia City, Kien Giang Province currently with a natural area of 9,888.9km2 and a population of 3,679,200 people.
Particularly for Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang Province, competent authorities have agreed to separate Tho Chau commune in Phu Quoc City to establish a separate district, accordingly researching to establish two special zones of Phu Quoc and Tho Chau.
Thus, after the merger, 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta in the previous Mekong Delta, together with Tay Ninh, reorganized 6 provincial administrative units. An Giang province (after the merger) is the province with both the population size and the largest area in the region.
Other provinces and cities after merging include: Tay Ninh (merged from Tay Ninh and Long An province); Can Tho (merged from Soc Trang province, Hau Giang province and Can Tho City); Vinh Long (merged from Ben Tre province, Vinh Long province and Tra Vinh province); Dong Thap (merged from Tien Giang and Dong Thap province; Ca Mau (merged from Bac Lieu and Ca Mau province).
