Electricity bills double, one and a half times higher than last month
Talking to Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Tien Nam (Tay Mo ward, Hanoi) said that because he is single, his family's monthly electricity bill usually ranges from 400,000 - 500,000 VND. However, the June bill skyrocketed to nearly 1 million VND while his family did not use any additional electrical equipment.
Ms. Tran Thi Hong (Hoan Kiem ward, Hanoi) said that she had to pay more than 5.3 million VND for electricity on July 1. Her family's short-term accommodation business, in previous years, even during peak season, the electricity bill was only about 4 million VND, which really surprised her.
Not only Hanoi, the reflection on high electricity bills also appeared in many other localities. Mr. Tran Van Toan (Tran Hung Dao ward, Quang Ninh) received a notice of invoice for June with a price of more than 12 million VND for production and business establishments, equivalent to a consumption of 3,447kWh. On average, only 6-7 million VND/month, many months are even lower. We use 3-phase electricity, divided by high and low hours, so we calculate very carefully to include in the price. This bill is twice as high as it is surprising, said Mr. Toan.
Faced with the above situation, many people believe that the electricity industry needs to publicly provide online search tools, easy to understand and transparent, helping people monitor and adjust consumption. At the same time, it is necessary to review the progressive price list, because in the hot season - the need for electricity is inevitable, not due to waste.
Reviewing all cases of sudden increases in invoices
According to Hanoi Power Corporation (EVN Hanoi), June 2025 recorded a clear temperature increase, with an average temperature of 2-6°C higher than in May. During the first and middle of the peak days of the month, the outdoor temperature reaches 41°C, even the actual temperature reaches 52°C.
In June 2025, the average daily electricity output in the whole of Hanoi will reach more than 90 million kWh, an increase of 12% over the same period in 2024. Total output in the month reached approximately 2,700 million kWh, of which the peak consumption level on June 2 recorded 110.9 million kWh - the highest since the beginning of the year.
The residential customer group alone accounted for more than 59.5% of total output, an increase of 1.15 times compared to May. This clearly reflects the impact of the weather on electricity consumption in households," said EVN Hanoi.
The representative of EVN Hanoi also pointed out that students' summer vacation coincides with a peak period of heat, causing the time to use air conditioners and electrical equipment during the day to be longer. Along with that, when the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the house increases, cooling equipment must operate continuously to maintain efficiency, leading to greater electricity consumption even though the usage period does not change.
According to EVN Hanoi, this is the summer electricity consumption rule, when households with young children stay home from school and use more electricity, causing the total electricity bill in June to increase compared to the previous month.
In response to people's feedback, EVN Hanoi recommends that customers proactively monitor daily electricity consumption through tools in the customer care ecosystem of the electricity industry. Setting a warning level for electricity consumption exceeding the average will help households promptly adjust their usage behavior.
During the summer, people should use air conditioners at a reasonable temperature (26 - 28°C), combined with fans to circulate air, turn off unnecessary equipment and limit the use of many large-capacity equipment during peak hours from 12pm - 3pm and 10pm - 24am.
Economic and efficient use of electricity not only helps reduce bills but also reduces pressure on the national power system, especially during the peak of the hot season, emphasized the EVN representative.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dung - Head of Business Department (Vietnam Electricity Group - EVN) said: "Customer's feedback on increased invoices needs to be considered in each specific case, it cannot be confirmed that all are increased. EVN is ready to coordinate to explain and clarify if customers have detailed questions".
Mr. Vo Quang Lam, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Electricity Group - EVN, said that he has directed power corporations to review all cases of sudden increases in invoices, and at the same time, publicize and make transparent information related to consumption output and electricity bill calculation methods. "electricity units need to clearly explain to customers, especially households using electricity for daily use, the reasons for the increase in invoices and the mechanism for calculating electricity bills according to the current price list," said Mr. Lam.
