Son La province continues to be warned of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening and night of April 20, locally with moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by the risk of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
This development occurred just a few days after a hailstorm covered many hills in Phieng Cam commune, affecting people's crops.
According to Son La Provincial Hydrometeorological Station, in the next 24 hours, the weather throughout the province will be affected by the southern edge of the low pressure trough with axis of about 24-27 degrees North latitude; at high altitude, wind convergence at level 1,500m will be maintained until the end of the night of April 20 and then gradually weaken.
Due to the impact of this weather pattern, the whole province is forecast to be cloudy, with scattered showers and thunderstorms at night, then generally no rain; cold at night and early morning in some places, sunny during the day, East to Southeast wind level 2-3. In thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
Some areas are forecast to have showers and thunderstorms on the night of April 20, including Quynh Nhai, Mai Son, Yen Chau, Song Ma, Bac Yen, Sop Cop and Thuan Chau. The lowest temperature is commonly from 19-23 degrees C, the highest from 27-33 degrees C.
Highland areas such as Bac Yen, Moc Chau, Van Ho continue to have cold conditions at night and early morning.
The meteorological agency warns that thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind can affect agricultural production, causing trees to fall, damage to houses, traffic works, and infrastructure.
Localized heavy rain also poses a risk of flash floods and landslides in areas along rivers and streams, hillsides, where the terrain is steep or construction works are underway; and may cause flooding in low-lying areas.

Previously, in the late afternoon of April 18, thunderstorms accompanied by hail occurred in Phieng Cam commune. At about 6 pm, black clouds covered the area, then hail poured down for about 15 minutes. Stones with diameters from 1-3cm fell thickly, covering many hills in white.
In Nong Tau Thai, Nong Tau Mong, Pa Hoc, Co Hinh villages, hail appeared densely in a short time, affecting many areas of crops, especially coffee on the hills.
