On August 17, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and Civil Defense of An Giang province said that two female tourists had just died while sitting in a sup boat while swimming in the sea in Tien Hai commune (Hai Tai island).
According to initial information, on August 16, a drowning incident occurred at the beach in Tien Hai commune (An Giang), causing the death of Ms. L.T.T.V (born in 2006) and P.T.T.V (born in 2011), both residing in Hoa Hung commune, An Giang province.
At around 1:30 p.m. on August 16, L.T.T.V, P.T.T.V and Le Tan Phat, along with 4 families of brothers and uncles (about 15 people) went together to the beach to visit, swim in the sea and brought a steam-filled sup. At around 2pm, everyone left, leaving 4 people.
The two victims and Phat took the sup to swim in the sea, while Nguyen Phuong Trinh sat on a chair playing football. While swimming in the sea, the two victims were sitting on a sup while Phat stood behind them and pushed them.
After that, without the sup, Phat called them to swim in but the two victims had not yet swam, at that time the big wave hit the shore hard, causing the sup to overturn, causing both of them to fall into the sea. After running to call for help, a young man ran out to help rescue L.T.T.V (about 2:30 p.m.).
Tranh ran to the emergency room together and took the victim to the emergency room, but had stopped heart and breathing. P.T.T.V was searched by armed forces and some fishermen (at around 3:30 p.m. to be rescued) but had a cardiac arrest, stopped breathing, and was then taken to the medical station where he was confirmed dead.
