After just over 2 years of lightning-fast construction, Long Thanh airport (Dong Nai province) has reached the milestone of welcoming the first flight, urgently putting it into commercial operation in 2026.

Major national key project constructed at lightning speed

The most important item at the Long Thanh airport project is the passenger terminal, which was started on August 31, 2023. To date, after more than 2 years of lightning-fast construction, Long Thanh airport has flown standard flights, welcoming the first technical flight. In the peak period, according to Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), at the Long Thanh airport project, contractors mobilized nearly 14,000 experts, engineers, workers and more than 3,000 construction equipment with hundreds of construction teams.

According to the actual record of Lao Dong Newspaper reporters at the Long Thanh airport construction site in Dong Nai province, all 12 bidding packages are being simultaneously implemented (3 other bidding packages have been completed) throughout the project, towards synchronous operation with the Long Thanh airport passenger terminal.

Currently, the modern passenger terminal shape at Long Thanh airport is gradually being completed, construction has been completed, floors, ceilings, doors of all kinds, metal, stone tiles... The passenger terminal has also basically completed the roof layers. Inside the terminal, modern and international standard equipment is also being urgently installed such as: Luggage handling system, security screening system, passenger bridge system, aircraft landing system, escalator system, pedestrian stairs, elevator...

Mr. Ngo Thanh Nghia - Commander of the construction of the elevator and escalator system at Long Thanh airport passenger terminal said: Construction is being urgently deployed, more than 50 workers are working overtime at night, constructing "three shifts and four crews" closely following the plan. "With the high determination of the contractors, the main bidding packages of Component 3 Project, Long Thanh Airport Project are all closely following the set schedule" - ACV said.

In addition to component projects 3, component projects 1, 2 and 4 invested by other units that have been urgently implemented in the past time have revealed their shape with international scale, ready for synchronous exploitation in 2026.

For component project 2 - Operations serving flight management, a 123m high air traffic control tower with a lotus flower design has been revealed. According to Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM): With a system of equipment owning a multi-layer backup mechanism and flight methods designed according to the most stringent international standards, VATM affirms its ability to master the airspace at a national key super air transport project.

Long Thanh Airport is a transshipment center on par with the area

Also according to ACV, when transportation projects connecting to Long Thanh airport are implemented (highways, ring roads, urban railways, light railways, high-speed railways, BRT buses... as well as separate roads and freight transport corridors), closed connections between Long Thanh airport - seaport system (Cai Mep - Thi Vai, Cat Lai) - industrial parks, logistics areas in Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City (including Binh Duong, Ba Ria - old Vung Tau) will provide multi-direction connections, convenient for passengers and goods from localities in the Southeast, Southwest and South Central regions.

According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Hung - Deputy General Director of ACV, the goal is to shorten travel time between the center of Ho Chi Minh City and Long Thanh, and at the same time provide multi-direction connection, convenient for passengers and goods from localities in the Southeast, Southwest and South Central regions. The early completion of the above-mentioned connecting transport projects will ensure synchronous infrastructure, smooth connection, improve operating capacity and competitiveness, helping Long Thanh airport promote its role as an international gateway and become an air transit center on par with the region.

ACV proposed a roadmap for transferring and operating international route groups in 3 phases: Phase 1 to form the international image of the gateway for transcontinental air routes; Phase 2 to form Long Thanh's international transshipment capacity; Phase 3 to be completed after 2028 when Long Thanh achieves an international exploitation output of over 80% of the designed capacity...

For Dong Nai province, Long Thanh airport is not only a "boost" to help Dong Nai province's economy develop and also clearly changes the lives of thousands of people after relocating land to build the airport.

To implement the Long Thanh airport project, Dong Nai province must recover an area of about 5,000ha, nearly 4,600 households are subject to resettlement arrangement. To date, the Loc An - Binh Son resettlement area, 280ha wide (served for resettlement for households who gave up land to build Long Thanh airport) has become the most modern technical and social infrastructure in Dong Nai province with spacious and bustling villas and townhouses...

Long Thanh International Airport is planned to reach level 4F (the highest level of the International Civil Aviation Organization - ICAO); is an important international airport of the country, aiming to become one of the regional air transshipment hubs, with scale and capacity after completing all 3 phases of 100 million passengers/year and 05 million tons of cargo/year. Initially, phase 1 will invest in building 2 runways, a passenger terminal with a capacity of 25 million passengers/year, a cargo terminal of 1.2 million tons of cargo/year and synchronous auxiliary items. With level 4F standards, Long Thanh airport is guaranteed to be capable of receiving the largest types of aircraft today, including the largest aircraft such as Airbus A380 or Boeing 747-8, serving transcontinental operations with maximum tonnage. Long Thanh Airport with the goal of becoming a smart airport (Smart Airport) and a green airport (Green Airport) with the integration of biometrics, AI and CO2 emission reduction, with a capacity of 100,000 tons of cargo/year.
