On October 5, the Gia Lai Provincial Border Guard Command reported on the incident in which a fishing boat of fishermen in the province was sunk by a Korean-born oil tanker at sea.
The fishing boat in distress has registration number BD 83019 TS, 22.6m long, 800CV capacity, and is a photographer. On board the boat were 11 crew members, owned and captained by Mr. Nguyen Tran Ut (born in 1976, residing in De Gi commune, Gia Lai province).
According to initial information, at around 10:30 p.m. on October 4, while operating at a location 17 nautical miles southeast of Ca Na estuary (Ninh Thuan province), Mr. Ut's fishing boat was hit by a Korean-South Korean oil tanker on a South-North journey.
After the strong impact, fishing boat BD 83019 TS immediately sent a distress signal. Fishing boat BV 95869 TS promptly approached and rescued 10 crew members. Captain Ut went missing, and the ship sank completely. 10 fishermen are being brought to Ca Na port safely.
Mr. Nguyen Hung (born in 1990) - captain of fishing boat BD 93966 TS operating near the area where Mr. Ut's boat was in distress - said that after the collision, the Korean-born oil tanker continued its journey, without stopping to rescue.
The Gia Lai Provincial Border Guard Command has issued a document proposing to the Provincial People's Committee, the Provincial Military Command, and the Department of Agriculture and Environment to report to the National Search and Rescue Committee; requesting the Navy Command, Coast Guard and the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center of regions II and IV to urgently mobilize search and rescue vehicles.
This unit also recommended that the Provincial People's Committee notify and coordinate with the Vietnam Maritime Administration to direct the Maritime Port Authorities of coastal localities to monitor and grasp information related to Korean nationwide oil tankers for coordination in handling.
