As the largest central ward of Thai Nguyen province, Phan Dinh Phung often faces flooding.
The flooded black spots here include Minh Cau Street, Royal Family Street, Thai Nguyen University Area, Hoang Van Thu Street...
According to the Thai Nguyen Department of Construction, heavy rains (from 50 to 100mm) in a short period of about 20 - 40 minutes have exceeded the design threshold of the current urban drainage system.

Flooding on many streets comes from old drainage systems, small culverts, and cannot meet the needs of prolonged heavy rain. At the same time, the rapid urbanization has caused the natural water absorption area to narrow.
Faced with the above situation, the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province has issued an Order to urgently build works to overcome the flooding situation in Phan Dinh Phung ward.
Implementing the direction, on December 17, the Thai Nguyen Department of Construction organized a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the project items. The construction units dredged and cleared the main drainage routes, renovated and added revenue gates and manholes at frequently flooded areas.
Also in Phan Dinh Phung ward, 2 working groups have been established to inspect violating works encroaching on streams, culverts and drainage corridors. The works are required to be dismantled so that localities can take measures to prevent flooding.
Recorded by PV on December 18, at the main roads that are often flooded in the Phan Dinh Phung area, workers are dredging canals and expanding revenue gates. Encroached works in the Dam Xanh street area are also being relocated.
Meanwhile, in Gia Sang and Quan Trieu areas, dredging and constructing drainage culverts are also being carried out.
Vice Chairman of Thai Nguyen Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Linh requested Phan Dinh Phung Ward People's Committee to mobilize people to voluntarily dismantle illegal and encroached constructions. Focus on clearing the technical corridor and handing over the clean site to serve the construction.
The Department of Construction completes procedures to organize dredging, clearing ditches, streams and renovating drainage systems. Request to start construction before December 20 and complete all dredging work before Tet.
In the long term, in the period of 2026 - 2030, Thai Nguyen will implement a series of solutions to prevent flooding in the central area with an estimated capital of about 450 billion VND. The goal is to solidify main drainage streams, upgrade and expand major sewers. Build regulating reservoirs and forced pumping stations in low-lying areas.

Regarding the flooding situation in Thai Nguyen, the Government Inspectorate recently issued Decision No. 1176 on the issuance of an inspection plan for 2026.
Accordingly, the Department of Inspection, Complaints and Denunciations of the Northern Region (Department I) was assigned to conduct an inspection of flood prevention and control work in Thai Nguyen.
It is expected that Department I will announce this inspection in the second quarter of 2026. The inspection period is 60 days. The goal is to clarify the shortcomings in flood prevention in Thai Nguyen in recent times as well as explain the causes of the historic flood last October.
The historic flood in October caused many areas in Thai Nguyen to be deeply flooded. More than 200,000 households were affected, 3,400 households had to be urgently evacuated, and 10 people were injured and died. In terms of economy, the estimated damage is more than 12,600 billion VND.
