On September 30, the People's Council of Kien Giang province, term X, held the 26th Session (Special Session) to approve a number of important issues on public investment and project implementation.
In particular, the Provincial People's Council voted to approve the draft Resolution "Project to classify Phu Quoc City as a type I urban area of Kien Giang province".
At the meeting, Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee Tran Minh Khoa said that Phu Quoc City, under Kien Giang Province, also known as Pearl Island, is the largest island in Vietnam, and also the largest island in the archipelago in the region, located in the Gulf of Thailand. The city has 9 administrative units including 2 wards and 7 communes.
Planned as a large, modern, high-quality, national-level tourism, resort, and international trade center in the region and the world, serving as a driving force to promote tourism development nationwide, making tourism a key economic sector associated with ensuring national security and defense.
In recent years, Kien Giang province in general and Phu Quoc city in particular have implemented breakthrough and flexible measures, suitable to the socio-economic development conditions of the locality. Mobilizing resources from organizations and individuals of all economic sectors at home and abroad to invest in developing tourism products that are highly competitive with countries in the region and the world, demonstrating the brand of Phu Quoc.
The city has mobilized capital to build urban and rural infrastructure. Many projects have been completed and put into use, creating an increasingly prosperous urban appearance. Up to now, Phu Quoc City has basically met all the conditions of a first-class urban area under the province. This is the will and aspiration of the Party Committee, government and people of Phu Quoc City and has been concretized in the Resolution of the Congress of Delegates of the Kien Giang Provincial Party Committee as well as Phu Quoc City for the 2020-2025 term.
This is also an opportunity and premise for Phu Quoc City to continue exploiting its potential, striving to invest in construction and socio-economic development, commensurate with being an economic zone with a special position; a center for tourism economy, sea and island eco-tourism services and having the potential to develop into a national tourist area, with many distinct values, high quality of the country and the world; a regional and international trade and service center; a regional and international high-tech health care and nursing center.
According to the Legal Committee of the People's Council of Kien Giang province, although the Urban Development Program as well as the Urban Classification Project of Phu Quoc city still have certain limitations, with the existing foundation, Phu Quoc meets the standards of a Type I urban area. The content of the program is built in accordance with reality, has synchronous solutions, and ensures compliance with legal regulations, which is the basis for building and developing Phu Quoc in the coming time.
The People's Council of Kien Giang province also recommended that the Provincial People's Committee continue to review criteria and indicators on urban development in stages to ensure consistency with construction planning, land use planning, socio-economic development planning, and the ability to mobilize actual resources of Phu Quoc city... as a basis for implementing the criteria to meet the requirements of a class I urban area.
The authorities will promptly implement the contents of the program after approval, paying special attention to investing in primary education, healthcare, clean water supply, waste and wastewater treatment, environment... to develop the city towards sustainable development.
