5 sets of martyrs' remains found on the same day in Quang Tri

Quang Tri - Functional forces found 5 sets of remains of martyrs at Bai Dinh and Quang Tri ward on September 10.

On September 10, Team No. 1 for Searching and Repatriating Martyrs' Remains, Political Department, Quang Tri Provincial Military Command continued to expand the search area in the melaleuca forest area of Bai Dinh village, Dan Hoa commune.

After many hours, functional forces discovered and exhumed 4 sets of martyrs' remains.

The first remains were discovered at a depth of about 1m, about 12m from the location where the remains were discovered and exhumed on September 8. The remains have decomposed a lot, some bones have turned into black soil. At this location, the search force discovered 30 teeth and artifacts including 7 buttons of shirts and pants; a box of foil oil; 21 nails; a bamboo mat and a hammock.

The second remains are still intact in the tomb, tied with 3 ropes at 3 locations. The bones have decomposed, turning into black soil. The accompanying artifacts include 11 buttons of shirts and pants; a nail; a parachute cloth and a tomb still containing the remains.

The third remains have 5 intact teeth, some other teeth are broken; some remaining bones. The artifacts include 12 buttons of clothes, pants; a tray and 6 nails for the coffin.

The fourth remains have decomposed into black soil but are still lying intact in the tomb. The tomb still retains its shape as when buried, with 3 parachute ropes tied at the head, body and leg positions. The accompanying artifacts include 11 buttons of shirts and pants; a tomb, a parachute scarf and a nail.

Thus, from the beginning of September to now, functional forces have found 8 sets of martyrs' remains in the melaleuca forest area of people on the foundation of an old cemetery.

According to information collected by functional forces, this area was previously the place where soldiers brought martyrs who participated in combat and sacrificed in Laos for burial.

Also on September 10, Team No. 2 for Searching and Repatriating Martyrs' Remains, Political Department, Quang Tri Provincial Military Command, repatriated one more martyr's remains in Thanh Co neighborhood, Quang Tri ward.

The remains were identified as being disturbed by bombs, many bones were broken. The artifacts found included rubber sandals, a decomposed chemical protection mask, a concrete cylinder cap, gun straps and 12.7mm bullets.

From August 10 to now, in Quang Tri ward, functional forces have collected 27 sets of remains of martyrs, including 5 mass graves.

Based on the location, tomb characteristics and artifacts found, functional forces determined that these were martyrs' remains. Currently, the identities and hometowns of the martyrs have not been determined.

After exhumation, the remains and artifacts are preserved for research, comparison, and information verification, and are also cared for and incenseed according to customs and regulations.
