“We also have an attic to stay in…”
It rained heavily from October 27th, and by evening the water started to rise and flood into her house. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu (62 years old, residential group 3, Kien Giang town) was flustered when she saw the water rising higher and higher.
Mrs. Thu lives with her sick son and grandson. When the floodwaters entered the house, she tried to manage, gradually moving each item upstairs, taking whatever she could. But she was helpless as she watched the refrigerator get soaked because she couldn’t move it up.
Previously, the forecast showed that storm No. 6 would cause rain in the area, so the family did not expect flooding and did not have time to buy and store food for many days.
“Everything is lacking, without electricity and water, all activities are even more difficult. In the morning, mother and children, grandmother and grandchildren eat instant noodles and cook a meal for the day. Clean water is used as economically as possible. The water used to wash rice is kept to wash food or dishes, and when it cannot be used anymore, it is poured away,” said Mrs. Thu.
On October 30, the floodwaters began to recede, but because of the power outage and lack of light, she had to wait until dawn to clean up the mud. The mud that had accumulated on the floor, Mrs. Thu scooped buckets of water from the yard to clean it up.
Mrs. Thu confided: “Early in the morning, the village chief brought two bottles of clean water to my family to use, I was both happy and touched. Although we have been alone for the past few days, we still have an attic to live in. Around here, there are many low level 4 houses, the water is up to the roof, it is very difficult. In this general situation, everyone should share and overcome the difficulties together.”
When the water receded, Mrs. Thu was able to wade out to buy food and necessities. However, she did not take her belongings down because of the forecast of more heavy rain, so the family continued to live upstairs.
Stand with the people
To leave the flooded house to his mother and wife, Chairman of Loc Thuy Commune People's Committee Duong Cong Nhan and the entire commune force have been on duty 24/7 for many days.
Every hour, Mr. Nhan monitors the weather and the situation in the commune to direct and support people against storms and floods. When the water rises, the entire force quickly splits into different directions to evacuate people and share food.
From the night of October 29, when the water began to recede at the Commune People's Committee, the entire cleaning force worked through the night with the motto "clean up as soon as the water recedes". At the same time, they quickly informed the people to take the initiative in cleaning up.
Mr. Nhan said: “Everyone has been on duty all these days, worrying about every flood. Currently, many households have cleaned up the mud, but we cannot be subjective. It is forecasted that there will be heavy rain soon, we inform the people, the agencies have not yet unloaded their belongings.”
Receiving orders to mobilize and carry out tasks to support people in flood prevention, officers and soldiers of the Quang Binh Provincial Military Command quickly arrived in Le Thuy district. Here, the force supported the evacuation of people from flooded and isolated areas. Special attention was paid to single-parent families, the elderly, and families with young children.
Not only that, the unit also provided food and drinking water for people to cook and use to ensure basic needs during these days. As soon as the water gradually receded, officers and soldiers were present to coordinate with the people to overcome and clean up.
The unit will continue to carry out its duties until the flooding situation is completely over before returning to the locality. Ensure all work is done, be ready to help people feel secure and soon stabilize their lives after the flood.
