National Highway 22 is a vital route connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Moc Bai International Border Gate (Tay Ninh), playing an important role in trade between Vietnam and ASEAN countries.

However, the road surface is currently only 36 - 40 m wide, including two car lanes and one motorbike lane on each side, often congested, traffic accidents increase, especially during rush hour.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the expansion of National Highway 22 will be synchronized with key transport projects such as Ring Road 3, Ring Road 4 and Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai Expressway, forming a modern inter-regional transport network, enhancing the connection of the Northwest region with the city center and the Southeast provinces.

Not only solving the problem of transportation, the project also creates motivation for urban embellishment, developing an urban model associated with public transportation (TOD) and effectively exploiting land funds on both sides of the route, contributing to promoting socio-economic development of the entire Northwest gateway area of Ho Chi Minh City.
