On the morning of March 18, the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board held an inauguration ceremony for the Cau Sap canal embankment and tidal culvert construction project (District 8).
The project has a total investment of 236 billion VND from the city budget, with a scale of a tidal culvert at the beginning of Cau Sap canal, connecting to Can Giuoc river.
The culvert is designed with a 15 m wide reinforced concrete structure, operated by a hydraulic cylinder system, combined with a turbocharged forearms.
In addition, the project also builds a embankment along the left bank of the culvert, from Cau Sap canal to Can Giuoc river, closing the embankment from Can Giuoc river to Nguyen Van Linh street.
The project started in December 2022 and was completed after more than two years of construction, affecting about 10 households with a site clearance area of about 8,800m2.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Anh Dung - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board, this project plays an important role in controlling high tides, preventing floods from the Can Giuoc River to overflow into Ward 7 (District 8) and Phong Phu Commune (Binh Chanh District).
In addition, the project is also designed to synchronously connect with the project "Solving flooding caused by tides in Ho Chi Minh City area taking into account climate change factors" (phase 1), also known as the 10,000 billion VND tidal prevention project.
The VND10,000 billion flood prevention project started in 2016 under the BT (build - transfer) form, including 6 large-scale tidal control sluices and a dike system of nearly 8km.
This project is responsible for controlling flooding in an area of 570km2, protecting about 6.5 million people in the center of Ho Chi Minh City and along the Saigon River.
However, despite having completed more than 90% of the project, the project still faces many difficulties related to capital and legal procedures, leading to the suspension of construction since November 2020.
This stagnation leads to many consequences, especially arising large costs, in which the daily interest alone is up to more than 1.7 billion VND.

Faced with prolonged problems, Ho Chi Minh City is actively finding solutions to restart the 10,000 billion VND tidal prevention project.
Currently, the city is completing legal procedures to implement a plan to use land funds to pay investors, at the same time negotiate, sign a BT contract appendix and adjust payment methods.
Ho Chi Minh City's goal is to complete and put the entire project into operation before December 31, 2025, thereby contributing to effectively controlling the flooding situation, improving people's lives and promoting socio-economic development.
