HCMC is about to spend VND8,614 billion to renovate canals in the inner city, reclaiming land from 1,065 households

Ho Chi Minh City - Van Thanh Canal (Binh Thanh District) will be dredged, embanked, and opened to traffic with a total capital of VND 8,614 billion, about 1,065 households have their land reclaimed.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just sent a document to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council on the contents expected to be submitted at the regular meeting in mid-2025.

In particular, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee will submit a proposal for investment in the project of dredging, renovating and constructing infrastructure for Van Thanh canal (Binh Thanh district).

According to the pre-feasibility study report, the project will renovate the entire main route of Van Thanh canal, about 2km long (from Vo Oanh street to Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal) and a 275m long branch of the canal.

The project will build concrete embankments on both sides of the canal, dredge the canal beds 25 - 50m wide, 3m deep and open up traffic roads along the canals with roadbeds from 6 - 20m wide.

The project will build a new Phu An bridge of 17m wide; upgrade and expand Ngo Tat To street (from Phu An bridge to Phu My street) to 25m and form a parallel road connecting to Dien Bien Phu street.

The project also invests in a synchronous technical infrastructure system such as domestic wastewater collection and drainage culverts, sewer systems and build parks and green areas along the canal with a total area of about 4.2 hectares.

The total land area to be recovered for the project is more than 7.47ha. There are about 1,065 cases of land acquisition, of which 772 households will be cleared.

The total estimated investment is about VND 8,614 billion, of which compensation, support and resettlement costs account for about VND 6,870 billion; construction costs are VND 1,326 billion, the rest is for consulting, management and contingency costs.

The project will be implemented in two phases. The 2025 - 2026 period focuses on project establishment and site clearance, with an estimated cost of about VND6,887 billion.

In the 2026 - 2030 period, the construction and settlement items will be completed, with a capital of about 1,727 billion VND.

Van Thanh Canal is located right under Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien), only about 1km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City. This is an important drainage route of Binh Thanh District and Ho Chi Minh City, and is also a large branch in the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal basin.

However, over the years, Van Thanh canal has been encroached upon, heavily polluted and seriously silted up, becoming a "black spot" for the urban environment.

The dredging, renovating and embellishing of this canal is an urgent requirement, especially in the context that the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal renovation project has been completed, bringing a new look to the central area.

When completed, the Van Thanh canal project will unblock the flow, improve water quality, reduce flooding, contribute to eliminating polluted ponds and lakes - where there is a potential risk of epidemics, and collect wastewater to bring to the centralized treatment plant.

The formation of the Van Thanh canal road will also create a continuous traffic connection with main axes such as Dien Bien Phu, Ngo Tat To, Nguyen Huu Canh, Vo Oanh..., increasing the ability to connect the area and reducing traffic congestion for the northeastern gateway area of Ho Chi Minh City.
