On September 14, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction said it is preparing a pre-feasibility study report for the project to build a new road opening in the Northwest (from Ring Road 2 to the border of Tay Ninh province). The project is expected to be submitted to competent authorities for consideration and approval of investment policy at the end of 2026.
This is one of 98 key traffic and technical infrastructure projects and works implemented by Ho Chi Minh City in the period 2026 - 2030.
According to research by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the newly opened Northwest road has its starting point at Ring Road 2 (National Highway 1), belonging to Binh Tan ward, the ending point bordering Tay Ninh province (old Long An province), connecting to the starting point of the DT. 823D project in Tay Ninh.
The route is divided into many sections with a cross-section scale of 25 - 52m, meeting 6-8 lanes for traffic.
In which, the section from Ring Road 2 to Binh Thanh road is 25m wide; Binh Thanh - Nguyen Thi Tu section is 30m wide; Nguyen Thi Tu - Ring Road 3 section is up to 52m wide and the remaining section is 44m wide.
On the route, it is expected to build 3 overpasses across the Central, Inter-regional and An Ha canals, along with an elevated bridge system and intersections at Ring Road 2, Nguyen Thi Tu, Vinh Loc and Quach Dieu.
Notably, the intersection with Ring Road 3 of Ho Chi Minh City is being studied for investment in the form of a complete flower market, combined with overpasses and branch roads, in order to increase traffic capacity and reduce traffic conflicts in the intersection area.
The preliminary total investment of the project is about 17,254 billion VND, using Ho Chi Minh City budget capital.
Of these, compensation, support and resettlement costs account for the majority, about 10,801 billion VND. The total land area expected to be recovered is about 56.92ha, of which the compensation area is about 53.12ha.
The project affects about 474 households, including 248 households completely cleared and 226 households partially cleared.
The estimated construction cost is nearly 5,000 billion VND, the rest is for project management, consulting and contingency costs.
For implementation, the project is divided into 4 component projects, including 3 projects serving compensation and site clearance and 1 project to build the main road.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the newly opened Northwest road plays an important role in completing the regional transportation network, reducing pressure on existing roads and increasing connectivity between Ho Chi Minh City and Tay Ninh.
When completed, the road will connect with traffic axes such as Tran Van Giau, Quach Dieu, Vo Van Van, Nguyen Thi Tu and ring roads, thereby forming a more synchronous traffic network in the Northwest area of the city.
Not only opening another connecting direction with Tay Ninh, the route is also expected to create more urban development space in the Northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, promoting the development of residential areas and socio-economic activities along the corridor.
