On September 12, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction said that it is preparing a pre-feasibility study report for the National Highway 50B construction project, expected to submit to competent authorities for consideration and approval of investment policy at the end of 2026.
This is one of 98 key traffic and technical infrastructure projects and works implemented by Ho Chi Minh City in the period 2026 - 2030.
According to the plan, the entire National Highway 50B is 55km long, playing an important role in connecting Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta region, connecting from Ho Chi Minh City through former Long An province (now Tay Ninh province) to former Tien Giang province (now Dong Thap province).
The National Highway 50B project being researched for investment by Ho Chi Minh City has its starting point connecting to Pham Hung street at the intersection with Nguyen Van Linh street, belonging to Binh Hung commune, Ho Chi Minh City. The ending point of the route connects to the area of Can Giuoc commune, Tay Ninh province.
The entire route is about 10.6km long, passing through Nha Be, Binh Hung, Hung Long communes of Ho Chi Minh City and Can Giuoc commune of Tay Ninh province.
The project is proposed for investment with a scale of 6 lanes, road surface width of about 40m. Site clearance will be carried out according to the approved planning scale.
On the main route, the project is expected to build a 6-lane bridge across the Can Giuoc River. The approach road in Tay Ninh province, about 700m long, is also invested with a scale of 6 lanes.
The preliminary total investment of the project is about 7,655 billion VND from the state budget. Of which, site clearance costs are about 1,755 billion VND and construction costs are about 5,900 billion VND.
The part belonging to Ho Chi Minh City alone is expected to require about 7,332 billion VND, including 1,684 billion VND for site clearance and 5,648 billion VND for construction costs. This construction cost includes the entire construction of Can Giuoc bridge located in Tay Ninh province.
Tay Ninh province is expected to allocate about 323 billion VND, of which 71 billion VND is for site clearance and 252 billion VND for construction costs.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council has approved Resolution No. 54/NQ-HĐND dated June 19, 2026 on agreeing on the policy of assigning the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee as the managing agency to implement the National Highway 50B construction project.
The investment in the route is expected to create an additional traffic axis connecting the Southern area of Ho Chi Minh City with the western localities, and at the same time expand the urban and industrial development space along the route.
Currently, major traffic routes connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta region such as National Highway 50, National Highway 1 and Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong expressway are under great pressure regarding vehicle traffic.
In which, National Highway 50 is one of the important gateway routes but often bears high traffic pressure. The formation of National Highway 50B is expected to create an additional traffic direction, reducing the load on the existing National Highway 50.
When completed, National Highway 50B will not only increase the connectivity of Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta provinces but also contribute to shortening the journey of transporting goods and reducing logistics costs.
