On September 29, Mr. Dang Dinh Trieu - Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu My Bac commune (Gia Lai province) said that the locality is compiling damage statistics to propose support for fishermen with boats and baskets swept away and sunk by high tides.
Previously, on September 27, when receiving information that storm Bualoi (storm No. 10) was about to make landfall in the Central region, fishermen in Phu My Bac commune proactively brought boats, basket boats and fishermen to shore to anchor the posts to avoid damage.
However, at around 2am on September 28, a strong coastal tide suddenly appeared, waves 4-5m high hit about 30m deep into the shore, sweeping away many vehicles and fishing gear.
"This high tide is so fast and intense that in just 1 hour, fishermen cannot react. Even those who have been at sea for a long time have never seen such a big tide," said Mr. Trieu.
Through inspection, the People's Committee of the commune recorded 11 baskets, 2 motor boats and more than 80 nets of 14 fishermen being swept away and submerged. Initial damage was estimated at about 160 million VND.
According to Mr. Trieu, the loss of boats, baskets and fishing gear is the main livelihood of the people. The commune government is coordinating with relevant agencies to propose appropriate support policies for fishermen according to regulations.
