In Phuoc An A hamlet, My Phuoc commune (Can Tho city), more than 18,000m2 of watermelon of Mr. Huynh Van Ut's family had only 10 days left to harvest when it was flooded due to broken embankments, causing a loss of nearly 60 million VND.
"The water overflowed too quickly, unable to stop it, the entire melon area was damaged" - he said.
Similarly, many areas of Autumn-Winter rice in My Huong and My Phuoc communes (Can Tho city) were also flooded due to rising water. Although people are mobilizing pumps to operate continuously, the fields in the middle of the vacant fields are surrounded by no banks, and the water cannot recede.
According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City), by the end of October 2025, the whole city had about 4,280 hectares of crops flooded due to high tides. Of which, fruit trees were most damaged with more than 3,840 hectares, the rest were 278 hectares of rice and 160 hectares of vegetables. Mr. Truong Chi Thong - Head of the Economic Department of Khanh Binh Commune People's Committee (An Giang Province) - said that about 103 hectares of mango in the closed dyke area of the commune were flooded. The reason is that the drainage system has been silted up for many years, the degraded sewers have not been repaired, while the private pumping station does not have enough capacity.
In Dong Thap province, Mr. Pham Kim Tri, a farmer in My Thien commune, said that nearly 1 hectare of his family's durian had just died after a flood combined with high tides and heavy rain at the same time. According to Mr. Tri, the embankment of canal 500 broke, causing water to overflow many fruit gardens and then crash into his garden.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, as of October 27, the whole province had 25/102 communes and wards directly affected by flood peak combined with high tides in 2025. The water overflowed many embankments, breaking a section of the dike in Truong Xuan, Phuong Thinh, Hiep Duc communes.
Floods have flooded houses, damaged infrastructure, completely damaged 11 hectares of crops and 361 hectares of newly sown rice; 570.5 hectares of fruit gardens were damaged from 30-70%; 7.96 hectares of fish ponds were affected, total damage is estimated at about 21.83 billion VND. And there were 3 landslides on the Tien River, collapsing 1 house and threatening 16 households.
According to the specialized agency, the main reason is the combination of the highest high tide peak of the year and floods in the upper Mekong River. Currently, local authorities and functional agencies are collecting statistics on damage, guiding people to overcome them, and studying solutions to reinforce the embankment system to limit risks in the following years.
