On the afternoon of August 21, the Traffic Police Department (CSGT) of the Ministry of Public Security said that from 2 pm on the same day, the traffic police force demonstrated the new traffic method in the overtaking lane on the Hanoi - Hai Phong and Cau Gie - Ninh Binh expressways.
Accordingly, the left lane adjacent to the median strip (lane 1) is identified as the overtaking lane, for vehicles traveling at high speeds. The modeling is aimed at guiding drivers to correctly use the lane when participating in traffic on the expressway.
Drivers moving in lane No. 2, adjacent to lane No. 1, when wanting to overtake, must make lane changes in accordance with regulations, have turn signals and ensure safety for vehicles in front and behind before changing lanes. After overtaking, the vehicle will return to lane No. 2.
In case in lane No. 1 in front in the same direction there are vehicles moving at a lower speed, but still ensuring the minimum speed and below the maximum speed, the traffic police driver will turn on the left turn signal, combined with using signals such as horns, lights, loudspeakers to signal to the vehicle in front.
When ensuring safety conditions, the driver in front will switch to lane number 2 to give way, then the traffic police car overtakes and continues to return to lane number 2.
According to the Traffic Police Department, when driving in this way, drivers must observe the front, rear and sides, and at the same time ensure speed as well as maintain a safe distance from vehicles before and after during lane changes.
Organizing traffic in this way aims to create the highest circulation for the flow of vehicles, especially on highways, contributing to making traffic more smooth and releasing traffic flow better.
The Traffic Police Department requests drivers traveling on the two expressways to grasp information, comply with letting go, changing lanes and jointly implement the above method to form overtaking lanes, serving high-speed traffic.
Regarding lane usage skills as above, the Traffic Police Department said that it has included it in the practical driving test on the road and will officially apply it from March 2027.
