On the afternoon of August 21, the Traffic Police Department (CSGT) of the Ministry of Public Security said that skills in using high-speed lanes and overtaking lanes will be included in the practical driving test on the road.
Accordingly, the regulation that vehicles moving at a lower speed must go to the right side according to their direction is specified in the long-distance test. The lane adjacent to the median strip is reserved for lane changes and overtaking.
According to the Traffic Police Department, Circular 108/2026/TT-BCA dated June 29, 2026 of the Minister of Public Security regulating the testing, issuance of driver's licenses and issuance, use of international driver's licenses, the practical driving test on the road for car driving license classes requires candidates to perform 2 tests: acceleration, overtaking and acceleration, lane change.
In the first situation, candidates move in lane No. 2, adjacent to lane No. 1 - the lane adjacent to the median strip. When wanting to overtake, candidates must carry out lane changes in accordance with regulations, have turn signals and ensure safety in front and behind before changing lanes.
After passing the vehicle in front, the candidate must drive back to lane number 2.
In the second situation, when in lane number 1 in front there is a vehicle traveling in the same direction at a lower speed, but still within the minimum and maximum speed limits, candidates must turn on the left turn signal, combine signals such as horns, lights or loudspeakers to signal to the vehicle in front.
When safety conditions are ensured, the vehicle in front will move to lane number 2 to make way. After overtaking, the test vehicle continues to move to lane number 2.
According to the Traffic Police Department, the inclusion of this content in the test aims to form skills in using lanes in accordance with regulations, while maintaining lane No. 1 for vehicles traveling at high speed and overtaking vehicles.
This traffic organization method is expected to create better circulation for the flow of vehicles, limit the situation of slow vehicles occupying overtaking lanes, thereby contributing to increasing traffic flow and releasing traffic on the road.
The test content on acceleration, overtaking and acceleration, changing lanes according to new regulations will begin to be implemented from March 1, 2027.
