The Traffic Police Department proposes piloting overtaking lanes on 2 expressways, implemented in the fourth quarter of 2026

The Traffic Police Department proposed piloting the overtaking lane on two expressways, and at the same time not allowing "borrowing" the opposite lane to overtake on National Highway 6.

On the afternoon of August 10, information from the Traffic Police Department (CSGT) of the Ministry of Public Security said that in the fourth quarter of 2026, functional forces are expected to pilot the "overtaking lane" on the expressway, not allowing the opposite lane to be lent to overtake vehicles on National Highway 6.

Proposal to pilot overtaking lanes on expressways

According to the Traffic Police Department, through the practice of ensuring traffic order and safety on key expressways and national highways, the Traffic Police Department proposed that the Vietnam Road Administration coordinate to implement a number of traffic organization plans to improve safety, reduce congestion and optimize the exploitation capacity of traffic infrastructure.

In which, the Traffic Police Department proposed that the Vietnam Road Administration coordinate to pilot the arrangement of lanes adjacent to the median strip (lane 1) as "dedicated lanes for overtaking vehicles".

According to this plan, vehicles only use this lane to overtake vehicles in front. After overtaking and ensuring a safe distance, vehicle drivers are required to move back to the right lane.

Vehicles are not allowed to run continuously on the overpass lane when the lanes on the right are completely empty.

The two expressways proposed for piloting include the Hanoi - Hai Phong expressway and the Cau Gie - Cao Bo expressway, Cau Gie - Ninh Binh section.

For the Cau Gie - Cao Bo expressway, the Cau Gie - Ninh Binh section, the proposed plan combines adjusting the maximum operating speed down to 100km/h.

The plan also proposes to add lane separation signs, VMS electronic warning signs "Lane reserved for overtaking - Do not drive continuously on the left lane".

At the same time, AI cameras are proposed to be upgraded to record the movement of vehicles on the overpass lane, serving cold fines.

No lending of the opposite lane to overtake on National Highway 6

For National Highway 6, the Traffic Police Department proposed that the Vietnam Road Administration direct Road Management Zones to review and reorganize traffic, arrange extended paint lines combined with soft medians at key sections.

This plan aims to absolutely not allow vehicles to borrow the opposite lane to overtake. Overtaking is only carried out on road sections that meet safety conditions or have separate overtaking lanes.

According to the assessment of the Traffic Police Department, the situation of unsafe overtaking is still quite common, even in curved road sections, limited visibility, slippery roads due to rain or when vehicles are circulating in the opposite lane. These are potential situations for particularly serious traffic accidents to occur.

According to the Traffic Police Department, after 3 months of piloting, relevant functional units will coordinate to assess traffic impact, as a basis for proposing amendments and supplements to relevant regulations.

The Traffic Police Department recommends overtaking in the right place and in the right way; do not occupy the overtaking lane and absolutely do not borrow the opposite lane to overtake. Traffic safety begins with complying with regulations and proactively giving way to each other.
