In the afternoon of August 24, a heavy rain lasting about 1 hour caused many roads in Dien Bien province to be locally flooded.
On Truong Chinh street, at times the water rose nearly 40cm, causing difficulties for people and vehicles to travel.
Vehicles moving through this area encounter many difficulties, especially when cars pass through, creating waves.
Water along with garbage and leaves follow the flow into residential areas on both sides of the road. Many business households have to find ways to prevent dirty water from overflowing into their houses, affecting daily life and business activities.
A grocery store owner on Truong Chinh street said that flooding occurs every time there is heavy rain.
Not far from Truong Chinh street, some localized flooding points also appeared inside Dien Bien provincial stadium.
Notably, this situation is not the first time it has happened. Previously, Lao Dong Newspaper reflected that the Dien Bien provincial stadium area and surrounding streets continuously experienced flooding, despite many projects to renovate, repair and invest in flood control systems.
According to research, before 2022, the People's Committee of Muong Thanh Ward (old), Dien Bien Phu City (old) had implemented a flood control project, which included items related to the drainage system around the stadium.
However, the water supply system from the stadium area to the Nam Rom River has not been synchronously renovated. This is considered one of the reasons why this area still experiences heavy flooding every time it rains heavily.
Inside the Dien Bien provincial stadium, repairs and upgrades have also been invested in many times. However, the local flooding situation has not been completely resolved because the drainage system to the Nam Rom River has not been renovated.
To overcome the above situation, in 2024, a project with a total investment of nearly 13 billion VND was implemented. The project invests in a drainage system with a 1m diameter culvert, buried about 3.5m deep, total length 650m, connecting from the stadium area to the Nam Rom River.The project is invested by the Dien Bien Phu City Urban Management Department (old), and is expected to improve drainage capacity, contributing to limiting flooding at the stadium and surrounding areas.
Also in 2024, the project to repair and renovate Truong Chinh street was implemented with a total investment of 39 billion VND, invested by the Dien Bien Phu City Project Management Board.
This is a road passing through the stadium area and has repeatedly recorded deep flooding after heavy rains.
The simultaneous implementation of projects is expected to fundamentally solve the situation of localized flooding in the central area of Dien Bien Phu City.
However, after a heavy rain lasting about 1 hour on the afternoon of August 24, the Dien Bien provincial stadium and some surrounding roads appeared flooded again.
