According to the Department of Irrigation of Kien Giang province, to prevent and combat the impact of inland flooding combined with high tides in 2024 in flood-affected districts, the sluice systems will operate from December 1 to December 31, 2024.
The Department also bases on the situation of agricultural production and aquaculture in localities in the province and the results of discussions and agreements with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Department of Economics of districts and cities for implementation.
According to the forecast of the Hydrometeorological Station of Kien Giang province, the average temperature in December 2024 is generally higher than the average of many years by about 0.2 to 0.5ºC and the same period. Water levels at inland stations fluctuate according to tides and inland rains with a gradual downward trend. The highest water level is 5-20cm lower than the same period in 2023.
Water levels at river mouth stations change with the tide. There will be a high tide during the month from December 16-18. Beware of high tides combined with rising water due to the influence of strong Northeast monsoon (in the middle and last weeks).
The sluices in An Bien - An Minh districts are closed to protect the winter-spring rice fields on the shrimp-rice land of the two districts. The Irrigation Sub-Department has operated and closed the sluices along the sea dike and seasonal sluices in time to serve the district's requirements. There are 17 sluices managed by the Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Agricultural Works that have not been closed.
Coordinate with local authorities to regularly check the water situation in the buffer zone and the water situation in the core area of U Minh Thuong National Park to operate the opening and closing of water regulation gates to suit the actual situation, prevent flooding as well as saltwater intrusion during high tides. It is expected to close the entire outer dyke sluice system on December 9, 2024.
The O Mon - Xa No dyke system will open all gates freely, only operating maintenance and anti-sedimentation of the construction area and maintaining electric motors.
Chau Thanh district's sewer system has closed sluices to store fresh water, control and regulate water; there is an inspection of the actual situation to operate and open to treat environmental pollution, prevent sedimentation, prevent flooding, and maintain the cylinder electrical system and electric motors.
Rach Gia City's sewer system continues to operate to regulate the opening and closing of sluices to store fresh water, control salinity; operate maintenance and environmental treatment, and prevent flooding. Particularly, sluice No. 1 and Song Kien sluices operate one-way to the sea to prevent flooding and drain pollution from the Agricultural Market and Rach Gia City area...
The provincial Irrigation Department said that depending on the water level and tide developments in the areas, the time to close and open the sluice gates may change according to the actual situation.
The operation needs to be widely announced to the people to be proactive in production and water circulation through the sluice; limit the adverse effects of sluice operation on production, aquaculture and water vehicles of the people in the area.
Check and reinforce embankments, pumping stations and sluice gates to promptly prevent high tides, abnormal sea level rise and saltwater intrusion into the fields. Monitor the situation of water resources and salinity in the area, promptly notify people to be proactive in using water for production and daily life.
