On September 16, Lao Dong Newspaper reporter noted that in the coastal area of Cuong Gian commune (Nghi Xuan) bordering Thinh Loc commune (Loc Ha), there is still the practice of creating clumps from casuarina trees in the lagoon near the sea to trap birds.
According to observations by Lao Dong Newspaper reporters, this location was also the location where migratory bird trapping occurred many years ago. However, unlike before, people often used to put fake storks in white foam to lure the storks to land, now there are no fake storks anymore, only bushes and plastic sticks to trap them.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Man - Head of Loc Ha District Forest Protection Department - said that the Department has advised the People's Committee of Loc Ha District to direct functional forces and local authorities to deploy measures to prevent wild bird trapping.
According to Mr. Man, this year's propaganda was deployed early to raise people's awareness, limiting them from investing in buying trapping tools from the beginning.
“Compared to previous years, the situation of trapping wild birds has decreased significantly. Currently, there are only about 20% of the previous number. Bird trapping is now done secretly and not openly like before. In Loc Ha area, there are now only traps on trees tens of meters high in people's gardens, so it is difficult for authorities to dismantle the traps,” said Mr. Man.
Nghi Xuan District Forest Protection Department also said that they have increased propaganda and launched a campaign to deal with the problem of trapping wild birds. However, it has not been completely resolved.
Mr. Hoang Quoc Huan - Manager of Ha Tinh Provincial Forest Protection Branch - said that currently, forest protection forces in districts and towns are increasing inspection and prevention of wild bird trapping in the entire Ha Tinh province.
According to Mr. Huan, the trapping of wild birds is becoming more and more sophisticated. In the past, some trappers often used foam boards shaped like storks to set traps, which were easily detected and dismantled by authorities. Now, they just stick small sticks with plastic on the bushes to make it difficult for authorities to detect.
According to Mr. Huan, in recent years, the protection of wildlife and migratory birds has been carried out very resolutely and seriously by the Ha Tinh authorities. Therefore, the trapping of wild birds, slaughtering and eating of wild animals has decreased significantly.
However, Mr. Huan also admitted that it is still very difficult to completely prevent the trapping of wild birds. Because for some coastal residents, the trapping of wild birds has long brought them a huge source of income.
Furthermore, bird meat is a favorite dish of many people, so as long as there is demand for consumption, there will be supply. Meanwhile, the functional force is thin, not every day regularly checking and preventing.
