On July 13, Mr. Le Ha An - Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Hiep Commune (Gia Lai) - said that he had directed functional departments and the Commune Police to strengthen disease control on pigs, while strictly handling acts of throwing animal carcasses into the environment.
According to Mr. An, the epidemic situation in pigs in Binh Hiep commune and neighboring communes is still complicated. Through on-site inspection, the locality recorded many livestock farming households arbitrarily dumping dead pigs into Van Phong canal and other ditches in the area.

This behavior increases the risk of spreading the disease in the commune as well as neighboring livestock areas, while causing serious pollution, directly affecting people's health.
Faced with the above situation, the People's Committee of Binh Hiep commune has requested the Commune Economic Department to coordinate with the Commune Police and the provincial Veterinary Force to simultaneously inspect livestock barns and instruct people on disease prevention and control in pigs. In case of detecting an epidemic, the collection and destruction of dead pigs will be carried out to prevent the spread.
The commune police are directed to increase patrols, promptly detect and strictly handle acts of throwing dead animals into the environment. The People's Committee of the commune strictly prohibits any organization or individual in raising dead animals in the environment in any form.

Mr. An said that in addition to taking action to handle the above situation, the commune has sent a letter of apology to all people for the activities of collecting and handling dead pigs that caused a foul smell during transportation to the burial site and centralized treatment.
"First of all, the People's Committee of the commune respectfully thanks the people for always accompanying, sharing and actively coordinating in disease prevention and control in livestock in recent times.
After checking, the situation of pigs being affected by the disease in the pigs has occurred in the past month. Many livestock farming households do not treat effectively but do not comply with treatment and destruction measures according to regulations, instead throwing dead pigs on canals, creating a foul smell and polluting the environment.
On July 12, the People's Committee of the commune and functional forces collected and treated floating pigs in a number of canals and ditches in the commune, to prevent the risk of disease spread and protect the environment.
However, due to the large amount of collected animal carcasses, which are in the process of decomposing combined with hot weather, the collection work has caused the smell and dirt to spread in neighboring areas along the transport route and some surrounding areas, affecting the lives and activities of people. The People's Committee of the commune sincerely apologizes and hopes that people will sympathize and share the above inconvenience," the letter stated.

As Lao Dong has reported, since the end of June, the Van Phong irrigation canal system flowing through Binh An, Binh Hiep, Hoa Hoi communes... (Gia Lai province) is facing serious pollution due to dead pigs being thrown haphazardly into the canal bed, giving off a foul smell.
Many dead pigs are in the process of decomposing strongly, bulging, giving off a strong stench and getting stuck at the discharge gates, most concentrated in the section flowing through Binh Hiep and Binh An communes...
Faced with this situation, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Gia Lai province has directed localities to establish specialized teams to collect dead pigs and take them for handling according to regulations. At the same time, it is required that neighboring communes coordinate in implementing this work, in order to limit pollution and the risk of disease spread.
