People, drivers benefit
At 7 am, at the bus stop on Tan Xuan street, Ms. Hoang Hai (Dong Ngac ward) took the electric bus route to her workplace in Bach Mai ward. After nearly 1 year of switching to using electric buses instead of motorbikes many days a week, she said that what makes her most satisfied is the smoothness and cleanliness.
“Previously, when riding an oil bus, I often heard quite loud engine sounds, especially when accelerating. Electric buses run very smoothly, without the smell of fuel, so it feels much more comfortable. In the summer, turning on the air conditioner is stable, the seats are clean, so I am willing to choose a bus instead of a private car” - Ms. Hai shared.
Also a regular passenger, Mr. Tran Van Tam (Hoang Mai ward) said that he clearly feels the change of the public transport system in recent times. According to him, electric buses not only create a more civilized feeling but also contribute to changing the image of public transport.
“Previously, many people were reluctant to take buses because they were crowded, noisy and smelled of oil. Now new buses are modern, convenient to get on and off, and operate smoothly, so I see many young people also starting to choose buses,” Mr. Tam said.
Not only passengers, the driver team also clearly feels the change. Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, a driver of Lien Ninh Transport and Service Joint Stock Company said: "According to my feeling, the car accelerates smoothly, with less vibration, so drivers are less tired during long shifts. The cockpit is also quieter, so focusing on observing traffic is convenient. Passengers often respond positively about the quality of the car, and many people also actively ask when other routes will switch to electric cars.
Positive feedback from people and drivers shows that switching to electric buses not only has environmental significance but also contributes to improving the quality of public transport services, thereby attracting more passengers to use buses.
Businesses catch up with green trends
The bus greening process in Hanoi is being implemented at an increasingly rapid pace.
According to Hanoi Transport Corporation (Transerco), to date, the unit has put into operation 281 electric buses on 17 routes. In 2026, Transerco plans to continue to convert 320 more vehicles on 26 routes, increasing the proportion of electric buses to more than 51% of the unit's total vehicle number.
Besides Transerco, many transport enterprises such as Lien Ninh Transport and Service Joint Stock Company, Hanoi Electric Vehicle Joint Stock Company, Bao Yen, Newway... are also gradually replacing expired diesel trucks with electric buses, contributing to expanding the green transportation network in the Capital.
According to a survey report by the Urban Committee, Hanoi City People's Council, the bus network currently has 1,946 vehicles operating on 129 routes operated by 11 units.
By the end of 2025, the entire network will have 503 clean-energy buses on 33 routes, including 364 electric buses and 139 CNG buses, accounting for about 26.5% of the total number of subsidized buses.
By the end of April 2026, the city will continue to add 203 electric buses on 12 routes, raising the total number of vehicles using clean energy to 822 vehicles, equivalent to 42.1% of the total number of subsidized buses.
The above figures show that the transition speed is happening faster than the initial phase, creating a foundation for Hanoi to complete the goal of developing green public transport in the coming years.
This orientation is also concretized in Plan No. 149/KH-UBND dated May 28, 2025 of the Hanoi People's Committee on implementing the Project on developing a public transport system by electric and green-energy buses.
According to the plan, in the period 2025-2026, the city focuses on completing the mechanism to support businesses to convert vehicles, expand the electric bus network, build a charging station system, apply technology in management and strengthen communication to get people to agree with the conversion policy.
In the period 2027-2030, Hanoi will accelerate the transition progress and strive to complete 100% of replacing gasoline and diesel buses with electric buses or vehicles using green energy at the latest by 2030. In parallel with that, it is expanding the charging station network and improving transport capacity to meet the increasing travel needs of people.
