Fuel pumping is the part responsible for bringing fuel from the tank to the engine with appropriate pressure. When this part malfunctions, the vehicle's operating ability will be significantly affected, and may even cause the vehicle to stall in the middle of the road.
Below are common signs that help car owners recognize problems with the fuel pump early.
Unusual noise from the fuel tank
Usually, a running fuel pump will emit a very small buzzing sound. However, if a loud whistle or unusual sound appears from the fuel tank area, this may be a sign that the pump is worn down or is not operating stably.
The cause may be overheating, lack of cooling fuel, or degraded internal parts after a long period of use.
Difficulty starting the engine
One of the most easily noticeable signs of a fuel pump failure is that the car is difficult to start. When the fuel pressure is not sufficient, the engine will have difficulty in receiving the fuel needed to start.
In many cases, the car can be started but quickly stalled immediately afterwards.
Shocking engine when operating
If the car shows abnormal acceleration and deceleration or jerking while running, especially at high speeds, the cause may be due to the fuel pump not supplying enough fuel for the engine.
This situation often occurs when the pump has weakened or the fuel filter is blocked, disrupting the fuel flow.
Sudden engine failure
This is a serious sign that should not be ignored. Overheating or severe damage can cause a sudden interruption of fuel supply, causing the engine to stall while the car is moving.
Not only causing inconvenience, this situation also poses a potential risk of traffic unsafety if it occurs on highways or traffic-intensive roads.
Loss of power when climbing slopes or carrying heavy loads
When the car needs more fuel to accelerate, climb slopes or carry heavy loads, a weak fuel pump may not meet the needs of the engine.
As a result, the car is more sluggish than usual, the acceleration ability is poor or there is a phenomenon of engine failure, vibration.
Engine power increases and decreases erratically
Some cases of instability in fuel pumps or fuel pressure regulators can cause fuel supply to exceed or be lower than actual demand.
This causes the engine speed to change abnormally, causing the car to accelerate or decelerate unintentionally, affecting driving experience and safety.
More fuel consumption
Unusual fuel consumption increases can also be a warning sign. When the internal valve of the fuel pump operates inaccurately, the amount of fuel delivered to the engine may be more than necessary.
The car can't start
In a serious damage phase, the fuel pump may completely stop operating, causing the engine to not receive fuel and not be able to start.
However, before concluding that the fuel pump is broken, it is necessary to check additional related parts such as the fuse lever, relay, fuel filter, injector or fuel pressure regulator.
Notes
Car owners should replace the fuel filter periodically, limit frequent emptying of the fuel tank and keep the fuel system clean to reduce the risk of pump damage.
