According to AutoCar , the next-generation Mercedes S-Class will offer two powertrains: internal combustion engines and pure electric motors. Although they may use different platform architectures, the two versions are expected to have similar exterior and interior designs.
AutoCar adds that the MB.EA Large platform will support the electric S-class and the current MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform will support the internal combustion engine model.
In terms of styling, Mercedes design director Robert Lesnik believes that Mercedes' future S-class ICE and EV will have a more intuitive connection. This strategy has also been applied to the G-class, similar to what BMW did with the Series 5/i5 and Series 7/i7.
According to European media, the merger would allow Mercedes to benefit from economies of scale because the S-class and E-class have much in common technically.
According to the company, sales of the S-class and EQS are currently slower than expected. Therefore, Mercedes was forced to cut production at the Sindelfingen factory in Germany. In the first half of 2024, sales of the S-class decreased by 22% compared to the same period last year, while demand for the EQS electric car did not really explode.
