According to AutoCar, the next-generation Mercedes S-class will offer two powertrains: an internal combustion engine and a pure electric motor. While they may use different platform architectures, these two versions are expected to have similar exterior and interior designs.
AutoCar added that the MB.EA Large platform will support the electric S-class and the current Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) platform will support the internal combustion engine model.
Regarding the design, Mercedes design director Robert Lesnik believes that the future Mercedes S-class ICE and EV will have more intuitive connectivity. This strategy was also applied on the G-class, similar to what BMW did with the Series 5/i5 and Series 7/i7.
According to European media, the merger will allow Mercedes to benefit from its economic scale because the S-class and E-class have many technical similarities.
According to the company, sales of the S-class and EQS are currently slower than the company expected. Therefore, Mercedes was forced to cut production at the Sindelfingen factory in Germany. In the first half of 2024, S-class sales decreased by 22% compared to the same period last year, while the demand for EQS electric vehicles did not really explode.
