German car brand Amarok has increased the appeal of the Volkswagen Amarok by breaking the Guinness World Record for crossing 10 deserts in the fastest time in Australia.
According to the company, the experienced team of drivers: Rainer Zietlow, Marius Biela and Brad Bowman drove the Amarok across 10 harsh Australian deserts, covering 6,421 km (3,990 miles) of terrain in 6 days and 17 hours. This achievement is the fastest result, breaking previous records.
Despite the harsh conditions, the Amarok made it through the whole ordeal virtually unscathed. According to local news site CarExpert, the truck only suffered one puncture during the entire adventure. It consumed 1,199 litres of diesel on the way, which equates to an average consumption of 18.7 litres per 100km (12.6 MPG).
While this isn't exactly frugal consumption, it's still impressive considering the long distances over endless sand dunes and rocky trails.
The record-breaking Volkswagen Amarok has been upgraded to a true off-road vehicle thanks to a number of accessories including off-road bumpers, additional LED lights, roof racks, snorkels, luxury exterior paint and four spare tyres in the rear bed.
The suspension has been raised by 40mm (1.6 inches), providing ground clearance of up to 275mm (10.8 inches). Additional underbody protection and larger tyres complete the package, ensuring the Amarok is best equipped to tackle Australia’s rugged terrain.
The facelifted model is expected to hit Australian showrooms in the second quarter of 2025. Volkswagen has yet to reveal production numbers for the Australian-spec model, but it's safe to say the exclusivity will add to its appeal.
