Doctors of the General Surgery Department of Vinh Long General Hospital have just successfully performed a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for a low-lying rectal cancer patient, without requiring temporary anastomosis.
The 67-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of prolonged hemoptysis. Through examination and implementation of modern techniques such as endoscopy, CT and MRI, doctors determined that the patient had stage III rectal cancer, with a tumor located very low, about 4 cm from the periphery of the anus.
Before the difficult case, the team conducted a multi-specialized consultation, choosing the method of minimally invasive laparoscopic resection, with the goal of completely removing the tumor, ensuring a safe resection area, and at the same time maximally preserving the anal sphincter for the patient.
After more than 3 hours of surgery, the surgery was successful. The patient's anus was preserved naturally, without the need to open the temporary anus. The postoperative pathology results showed that the excision area was completely negative, meeting the requirements of radical treatment.
Thanks to the application of modern endoscopic techniques and an early recovery strategy, patients recovered quickly, could walk and eat normally after 2 days and were discharged after a week of treatment.
According to BS.CK1 Tran Nhat Phi - General Surgery Department, rectal cancer can be detected early if people pay attention to signs such as blood digestion, changes in bowel habits or prolonged abdominal pain. Timely examination helps improve treatment effectiveness and increase the ability to preserve function.
The success of the surgery continues to affirm the professional capacity of the provincial-level medical team, and at the same time opens up more hope for patients with low bowel cancer - a difficult disease in digestive surgery.
