When doctors went to the hospital to find patients

Dr. Trinh Dinh Hai - Head of the Department of Dentistry, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, may never forget his "all-time" case.

Reading an article helps patients have nearly 10 more years of healthy life

Early in the morning of late 2015, Prof. Dr. Trinh Dinh Hai, then Director of the Central Dental and Maxillofacial Hospital in Hanoi, read an article published in Lao Dong Newspaper about the case of patient Trieu Mui Chai with a giant tumor covering his face for 25 years. The image of an elderly woman of ethnic minority haunted him. He kept flip-flip the pages of the newspapers, then reflect...

"We were very surprised why our compatriots had such a large, severe tumor. At that time, I myself was the leader of the Central Dentistry Hospital in Hanoi - the final branch of the periodontology industry in the country, thinking that if the hospital had not performed surgery on this patient, there would be no other place to solve it. So at the first delivery session of the week, I gave the article to my colleagues to read, and assigned the two departments to find ways to contact Lao Dong Newspaper, and Ms. Trieu Mui Chai's family to immediately take a patient from Cao Bang to Hanoi for examination, to see what could be best done for the patient" - Professor Trinh Dinh Hai recalled the opportunity that brought the patient to the hospital.

The successful surgery at the end of 2015 "treated" the complete removal of the 4kg tumor and reshaped the face, returning the correct location of the eyes, nose, and mouth to patient Trieu Mui Chai, helping the patient return to normal life.

In April 2024, Ms. Trieu Mui Chai passed away from a temporary illness. This news that came to Professor Hai moved him. So Ms. Chai has lived a healthy life for nearly 10 years after the major surgery - a number that even Ms. Chai's relatives and doctors could not have expected. Ms. Chai has received the best medical care, living a true "gentle" life.

Professor Trinh Dinh Hai - former Director of the Central Dentistry Hospital in Hanoi highly appreciated the role of media agencies, especially Lao Dong Newspaper, so that the hospital and those working professionally have the conditions to access and perform their duties and roles as doctors, helping Ms. Chai not have to wear a giant tumor until her last years.

Helping parents find free surgeries

Not only taking patients to the hospital to enjoy the most advanced medical services, Lao Dong Newspaper has been accompanying the dental and maxillofacial industry for many years, communicating about charity surgery programs for children with cleft lip and mouth disease. Many parents have learned about this through newspapers and found free surgical facilities.

"Children with disabilities with cleft lip and mouth, where are they?" is the title of an article published by Lao Dong Newspaper since 2019, interviewing Professor Trinh Dinh Hai about the situation of children with open lips and mouth artery that do not go to the hospital for examination and early surgery. The effectiveness is not small. Many parents who are workers have taken their children to the hospital for early surgery. Some children are consulted and cared for right from the womb, when they are diagnosed with birth defects.

Ms. N.M.A (working at a animal feed factory in Vinh Phuc) shared that in 2022, when she went for a pregnancy check-up, she was shocked when the doctor announced that the fetus was defective. Immediately, she searched for information and when she read an article in Lao Dong Newspaper about a comprehensive care program for children with cleft lip and mouth disease, she immediately went to the hospital and was advised by doctors on early treatment. After the baby was born, he has undergone 2 surgeries and treatment, the results were beyond the expectations of her and her family.

Now, when Professor Trinh Dinh Hai has switched to educational work at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, he continues to feel pain and worries about the treatment of children with birth defects. Professor Hai and doctors and experts from the Department of Dentistry, University of Medicine and Pharmacy continue to launch a free examination, treatment and surgery program for children with birth defects, regularly held at E Hospital, in coordination with the smile Surgery Organization, hoping to help many children with birth defects.

"This will be the largest program ever with the participation of all teachers of the oral and maxillofacial surgery department and the support of volunteers who are residents and graduate students of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Medicine and Pharmacy" - Prof. Dr. Hai proudly said.
