The patient is Mr. M.V.H (71 years old, An Minh district, Kien Giang province), with a history of high blood pressure, lipid disorders, heavy smoking, often having pain when walking and severe pain in the right calf.
Recently, the patient suffered from severe narrowing of the arteries in both lower limbs, painful leg ulcers and was taken by his family to Can Tho University Hospital for treatment.
Through the examination and necessary clinical and paraclinical tests, the doctors concluded that the patient had chronic superficial femoral artery occlusion (right), very weak collateral circulation, and scattered narrowing of the left lower limb artery in many segments.
The medical team performed an intervention to scan, dilate and place a stent in the patient's lower limb artery (right). This was a big challenge for the medical team because the patient was elderly and had many serious vascular problems, making the intervention more complicated.
The procedure was successful. After 2 days, the patient recovered, his blood vessels were reopened, his limb pain was gone, he was gradually able to walk again and was discharged from the hospital.
According to medical experts, in lower limb arterial stenosis, the legs do not receive enough blood from the heart to keep up with the body's needs, which can cause leg pain when walking and other symptoms.
Experts recommend that in the early stages, patients need to seriously change their lifestyle, eliminate risk factors such as quitting smoking, tobacco, limiting alcohol; prevent high blood pressure by eating only 3 meals/day; should eat steamed and boiled dishes, avoid fried foods, limit fat, especially animal fat; avoid stimulants such as tea, coffee; limit salt intake, salty sauces, foods rich in sodium such as dried shrimp, salted duck eggs, salted lemon, and pork floss.
Patients also need to increase physical activity, exercise regularly and moderately such as walking, swimming for 30 - 45 minutes, 3 - 4 times/week; cycling, cleaning the house, taking care of ornamental plants to improve health.
