Spending billions to build dormitories in one place, students live in another

Hữu Long |

Khanh Hoa - Two dormitories in Nha Trang City were invested with hundreds of billions of dong, but because they are located far from the center, they cannot meet the needs of students and are abandoned.

Many years abandoned because too far from the center

The dormitory of Khanh Hoa Medical College located in Vinh Ngoc Commune, Nha Trang City has been abandoned for many years without investment in repairs. Only a few hundred meters away from the dormitory of Khanh Hoa Medical College is the Nha Trang student dormitory (Vinh Hai Ward) which is also in the same situation with no students living there.

This dormitory is always closed, inside, many equipment and items are degraded and damaged such as broken glass doors, peeling tile floors; railings and stairs are all damaged.

It is known that in 2010, in order to create conditions for students of Universities and Colleges in the province to have accommodation and study with peace of mind, Khanh Hoa province approved the investment project to build student dormitories (Student dormitories of the cluster of schools in Nha Trang).

The dormitory project of Khanh Hoa Medical College was invested with a budget of 77 billion VND with a scale of 4 blocks of 5 floors. Because the construction is 7 km from the current school, far from residential areas, and lacking support services, the dormitory area is not interested in living.

In 2014, Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee assigned the Housing and Apartment Management Center to operate and arrange for students to rent. The rental process did not meet initial expectations, with the student occupancy rate only averaging about 50% of the rooms.

It wasn’t until 2020 that the dormitory was requisitioned as a treatment facility for COVID-19 patients. After the pandemic was contained, the dormitory fell back into disrepair.

Urgent repairs to serve student needs

In November 2024, Mr. Dinh Van Thieu - Vice Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee met with relevant agencies before agreeing to repair the Nha Trang student dormitory. The repair of the above dormitory is to arrange accommodation for students from other provinces studying in Khanh Hoa province who need to find accommodation.

Regarding the dormitory of Khanh Hoa Medical College, Mr. Le Chi Nguyen - Director of the Center for Housing and Apartment Management of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Construction confirmed that the locality has completed the procedures to transfer the dormitory of Khanh Hoa Medical College to Khanh Hoa Medical College.

According to Mr. Le Chi Nguyen, after receiving the handover, Khanh Hoa Medical College will be responsible for managing, repairing and operating the above dormitory.

Meanwhile, answering people about the management of the dormitory of Khanh Hoa Medical College, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Minh - Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Construction said that the province is currently considering approving the policy of repairing and renovating the above dormitory to ensure operating conditions; at the same time, it is also considering and developing a plan to effectively use the project to avoid waste.

Mr. Tran Ngoc Thanh - Principal of Khanh Hoa Medical College confirmed that the school has now received the handover of the dormitory area. In the coming time, the school will continue to receive the handover of the entire dormitory area.

In the immediate future, the school will send a team to clean up and clear the area around the dormitory. In addition, Khanh Hoa Medical College will officially move to a new facility (behind the dormitory) on December 9, 2024. According to Mr. Tran Ngoc Thanh, after the school moves to the new facility, the demand for students to register to stay in the dormitory will certainly increase.
