How to prevent water from overflowing into the house when flooded

When heavy rain causes flooding, water can flood into the house through doors, crevices and drainage systems. Some simple ways below help limit water inflow into the house.

Use sandbags

This is a traditional method, which can be implemented quickly when heavy rain or water suddenly rises. Sandbags should be stacked close together in many layers in front of the main door, back door, low windows and locations with water overflowing risk. You can add tarpaulins or nylon sheets inside to limit water from passing through gaps.

However, sandbags are only suitable for situations where water rises at a moderate level. When the water flow is strong or the water level continues to rise, it is necessary to add a shield to improve the effectiveness of water prevention.

Use wooden planks, water shields

Wooden planks, plastic sheets, mica sheets, or specialized shields can be used to seal gaps in the main door, rear door, and low windows. The shield needs to be the size appropriate for the door frame, firmly fixed, and can be combined with rubber gaskets to limit water leaks through the edges.

Placing a shield inside or outside the sandbag row also helps create an additional layer of protection. This is a relatively flexible solution, which can be disassembled and used many times.

Seal the gaps, vents and low positions

Water can not only overflow through doors but can also creep in from the base of walls, door crevices, technical holes, pipes or low positions in the house. Therefore, before the rainy season, you should check all these points and use rubber gaskets, waterproofing glue or suitable materials to seal them.

For floor drainage holes, it is necessary to check the possibility of water flowing back from the drainage system into the house. A one-way valve or counterflow solution suitable for the drainage system of the project can be installed.

Elevating important items and equipment

When living areas are at risk of flooding, in addition to preventing water from outside, it is necessary to proactively bring electronics, papers, goods, electrical equipment and valuable items to a high location. Electrical outlets, electrical wires and equipment placed close to the ground need to be checked, avoiding contact with water.

In particular, do not continue to use electricity sources in flooded areas. If water is likely to access the power system, it is necessary to safely disconnect the power source and only turn it back on after inspection.
