According to the Decision approving the adjustment of Can Tho City Planning for the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050 just signed by the Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, the city aims to become a growth pole of the nation, playing a driving role in development and spreading to the entire Mekong Delta region.
According to the plan, by 2030, Can Tho strives to achieve an average economic growth rate of over 10%/year; Average GDP per capita at current prices reaches about 8,500 USD; the proportion of the digital economy reaches at least 30% of GRDP. The economic structure shifts towards reducing the proportion of agriculture to below 16%, strongly increasing industry - construction and services.
Can Tho orients industrial development in depth, prioritizing high-tech agricultural and aquatic processing, renewable energy, mechanical engineering, medical equipment, new materials and supporting industries. At the same time, forming an industrial park system, modern industrial clusters, associated with logistics and strategic transportation axes.
In the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050, Can Tho City orients to form 1 economic zone and 40 industrial parks with a total area of about 61,238 ha. In the period 2026-2030, vision to 2050, there are 46 industrial clusters with a total area of about 2,749 ha; of which by 2030, there will be 35 industrial clusters, with a total area of about 2,083 ha.
Can Tho will also form Tran De Economic Zone with a scale of over 40,000 hectares, associated with Tran De International Seaport, playing the role of import and export hub and logistics center. The city also researches piloting a Free Trade Zone with a scale of 2,000–5,000 hectares, creating motivation to attract strategic investment.
Regarding development space, the plan identifies 5 socio-economic regions and 6 key economic corridors such as Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang, North - South axis, Hau River and coastal corridor, in order to expand development space and strengthen regional linkages.
Vision to 2050, Can Tho aims to become a modern river-sea city, "Green - smart - unique Mekong Gateway", a logistics, energy, green industry and high-quality service center of Southeast Asia.
