Long Thanh commune is merged from 4 units including Binh Son commune, Loc An commune, Long An commune and Long Thanh town; with a natural area of 130.12 km2, population of 95,992 people.
Long Thanh has a particularly important geographical location, located in the center of the key economic region in the South, about 40 km east of the center of Ho Chi Minh City and adjacent to dynamic industrial areas such as Nhon Trach and the industrial - seaport area of Ba Ria - Vung Tau (Ho Chi Minh City). This location creates favorable conditions for Long Thanh to promote its role as a gateway, connecting center and urban development in the region.
The role and position of Long Thanh city is defined as a city closely linked to Long Thanh airport, playing the role of national gateway in international exchange; is a logistics service center supporting the airport, logistics, warehousing, multi-industry industry, high-tech industry of the Southeast region; is a multimodal transportation hub of significance to the nation, Southeast region and Dong Nai; and is also an area with an important position in terms of national defense and security of the region and the whole country.
The airport city is planned with an area of up to 43,000 hectares, with the goal of connecting globally to make Long Thanh area a leading international aviation - logistics center in Southeast Asia.

Long Thanh, after becoming a ward, will focus on synchronously investing in modern technical infrastructure systems, especially traffic axes connecting airports, lighting systems, electricity supply, water supply and smart cities to create a foundation for sustainable development.
Along with that, the locality prioritizes strong development of high-quality social and commercial - service infrastructure such as: commercial centers, entertainment areas, chains of restaurants, hotels from 4-5 stars or more associated with the logistics and aviation service ecosystem.
Long Thanh Airport is a particularly important infrastructure project, with a total area of 5,000 hectares, a total investment of more than 16 billion USD, planned to reach level 4F. When all stages are completed, the airport is expected to reach a capacity of 100 million passengers/year and 5 million tons of cargo/year.
