The Xuyen Tam canal renovation project has a total length of nearly 9 km, passing through the former Binh Thanh and Go Vap districts, now belonging to Gia Dinh, Binh Thanh, Binh Loi Trung and An Nhon wards.
The total investment of the project is over 17,000 billion VND, of which compensation, support and resettlement costs alone accounted for 14,000 billion VND.
To implement the project, Ho Chi Minh City must recover land from 2,190 cases, including 897 cases of partial clearance and 1,293 cases of full clearance.
Currently, An Nhon ward has completed the land recovery of 138 households. However, in Gia Dinh, Binh Thanh and Binh Loi Trung wards, there are still hundreds of cases that have not handed over land.

On May 14, according to Gia Dinh Ward People's Committee, the locality has the largest number of affected households with 869 cases, including 263 cases of partial clearance and 606 cases of full clearance.
By May 13, 615 cases had handed over land, reaching a rate of 70.7%. Currently, there are still 254 cases that have not been handed over, mainly households that have been completely cleared.
The biggest difficulty currently is many dossiers related to co-inheritance. According to regulations, people must complete procedures to declare inheritance to be eligible to receive compensation and support money.
To remove obstacles, Gia Dinh Ward People's Committee has compiled a list of problematic cases to send to the People's Court of Region 5 and notary offices for coordination and support; at the same time, mobilizing law offices in the area to provide free legal advice to people.
The locality also strengthens mobilization and explanation to create consensus, striving to complete the handover of the site on schedule as required by the city before June 30.
In Binh Thanh ward, the project affects 872 cases, including 364 cases of partial clearance and 508 cases of full clearance.
Currently, there are 580 cases agreeing to hand over land, reaching a rate of 66.5%.
According to Binh Thanh Ward People's Committee, the implementation process has generated many objective obstacles related to the allocation of land plots, resettlement apartments, social housing and handling of specific legal documents.
The locality said it is coordinating with departments and branches to find flexible solutions to ensure people's rights with the spirit of "leaving no one behind", and striving to complete the handover of land in June.

Meanwhile, Binh Loi Trung ward has 311 cases subject to land recovery. Up to now, 221 cases have handed over land, and the remaining 90 cases have not been completed.
Among these, there are 35 cases belonging to Binh Hoa Commercial Residential Area waiting to adjust land acquisition boundaries. After the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee completes relevant procedures, the locality will continue to carry out compensation and site clearance work.
In addition, the remaining 55 cases are aimed at completing handover before May 30, 2026.
For cases that have been mobilized many times but still do not agree to hand over the site, Binh Loi Trung Ward People's Committee said it will implement coercion in accordance with legal regulations to ensure the overall progress of the project.
The Xuyen Tam canal renovation project includes items such as dredging the canal bed 3.5 m deep, expanding the canal bed from 20 - 30 m, and building a synchronous wastewater and rainwater collection system.
On both sides of the canal, a 6m wide traffic road will be formed on each side, a 3 - 4m wide sidewalk and a system of parks and green trees.
After completion in 2028, the project will not only contribute to improving the environment, flood control and urban embellishment, but also open up new public spaces, creating a spacious appearance for the inner city of Ho Chi Minh City.
