Ho Chi Minh City approved the component project to renovate Van Thanh canal with a total capital of more than 1,743 billion VND, about 1,077 households will be cleared to implement the project.

Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just issued a decision approving component project 1: Dredging, environmental improvement, and infrastructure construction of Van Thanh canal (Thanh My Tay ward).

The project renovates the entire Van Thanh canal (from Vo Oanh alley to Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal) with a total length of about 2.24 km. In which, the main canal is nearly 1.96 km long and a secondary canal branch is about 275 m long.

In parallel, there is the formation of traffic roads along canals and parallel roads connecting to Dien Bien Phu road, ranging from 11 m to 20 m wide.

The project also builds a new Phu An bridge 19 m wide; expands and upgrades Ngo Tat To street (section from Phu An bridge to Phu My street) to 25 m.

About 4.2 hectares of land along the canal will be planned into parks, green spaces and technical infrastructure works, contributing to improving the landscape and living environment for people.

Component project 1 has a total investment of more than 1,743 billion VND from the City budget, implemented in the period 2025 - 2030.

The Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board is assigned to be the investor, fully responsible for the legality, accuracy of dossiers, design solutions, total investment and project efficiency; ensuring progress, quality, safety and avoiding loss and waste of public investment capital.

In addition, component project 2 on site clearance and resettlement of Xuyen Tam canal has a total capital of more than 6,812 billion VND.

A total of 1,077 cases were cleared, of which 749 households had to be completely cleared.

According to the plan, site clearance will be completed this year; the Van Thanh canal renovation project is expected to start construction in 2027 and be completed by the end of 2029.

Van Thanh canal is located right below Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien), an important drainage route of Binh Thanh district in the past and the inner city area.

However, for many years, the situation of encroachment, sedimentation and serious pollution has turned this canal into an environmental "black spot".

When completed, the project will not only help clear the flow and collect wastewater to the centralized treatment plant of Ho Chi Minh City, but also create a traffic axis along the canal connecting vital routes such as Dien Bien Phu, Ngo Tat To, Nguyen Huu Canh, Vo Oanh...
