Malaysian football fined over 15.5 billion VND in 2025

MINH PHONG |

A series of penalties from FIFA, AFC and domestic leagues have caused Malaysian football to fall into crisis with record high fines in history.

Malaysian media reported that the total fine amount that the country's football had to bear in 2025 exceeded 2.4 million ringgit (about 15.5 billion VND), the highest ever recorded. This is a consequence of violations related to management, player records and loss of control in the stands.

Sanctions are issued by various organizations, including the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and the Organizing Committee of the Malaysian National Championship (MFL).

Looking back at previous years, the difference is even more clearly shown. In 2023, the total fine only stopped at about 66,000 ringgit (about 428 million VND). This number increased to 186,000 ringgit in 2024 (about 1.2 billion VND), before increasing many times in 2025.

The biggest reason why Malaysian football suffered heavy financial losses came from the case of forging documents related to 7 naturalized players. FAM was fined 350,000 Swiss francs by FIFA, then continued to be fined another 10,000 Swiss francs for using players who did not meet the playing conditions.

In parallel with FIFA's sanctions, AFC also issued a decision to fine FAM with a total amount of more than 50,000 ringgit, related to violations occurring in the match between the Malaysian and Nepalese teams in the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers on November 18.

According to Malaysian media, in addition to the announced fines, FAM is also facing great financial pressure from suing FIFA to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This process is expected to incur more costs.

In addition, 7 naturalized players involved in the above incident are also being fined separately by FIFA, each person being fined 2,000 Swiss francs, leading to the possibility that FAM will have to continue to pay additional related fees.

Not only at the federation level and the national team, many Malaysian clubs such as Johor Darul Ta'zim or Selangor FC are also frequently on the AFC's sanctioning list related to the organization and excessive behavior of fans.

It's a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit.
