Jose Mourinho just had a reunion in Portuguese football in a friendly match between Fenerbahce and Portimonense at Albufeira.
After the 2-1 victory, he did not hesitate to declare to his home media: "I will definitely lead the Portuguese team. It hasn't happened yet, but it will happen."
At 62, coach Mourinho still talks about his future plans with determination: "I did not choose to lead the national team to retire or work for a lack of fame. I want to work at a time when I am still energetic, passionate and intellectual enough to contribute. It will be a milestone in my career, not the end."
Currently, Mourinho has a contract with Fenerbahce until 2026, but according to Portuguese press, the agreement has a clause that will open the way for him if he is invited by the national football federation.
The Portuguese team is still led by coach Roberto Martinez until the end of the 2026 World Cup, but this position can be completely changed depending on the result.
Coach Mourinho once achieved success in his home country when helping Porto win the Champions League 2004, but has never sat as captain of the national team. He once revealed that he had twice refused the opportunity to lead the European Selecao because it was not the "right time".
Over the past two decades, he has conquered every European arena with Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Man United and Roma, becoming the only coach to have won all three of UEFA's club tournaments: Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
