The Indonesian team could not create a surprise in the fourth qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup. They suffered two consecutive defeats against Saudi Arabia and Iraq, thereby officially ending their dream of participating in the most prestigious tournament on the planet next summer.
Recently, coach Patrick Kluivert shared his passionate experiences after his journey with Indonesia. The Dutch strategist admitted his disappointment at not being able to help this team qualify for the 2026 World Cup. At the same time, he also thanked the fans for always supporting and standing side by side throughout the recent campaign.
"To the Indonesian fans, I feel the same pain and disappointment as you. The failures against Saudi Arabia and Iraq are bitter lessons, but also remind us of the height of the dream we pursue together.
As the head coach, I take full responsibility. We have given everything - with heart, with discipline and solidarity. Every day, this collective strives to mature, learn and represent Indonesia with pride.
We have not been able to participate in the 2026 World Cup, but have set a new standard, a foundation to continue building with confidence. We have worked tirelessly to connect domestic and foreign players into a single family, supported by a unanimous coaching staff, with a common voice" - coach Kluivert shared.
Mr. Kluivert was appointed as Indonesia's head coach earlier this year, replacing his predecessor Shin Tae Yong. The Dutch strategist had a not-so-smooth debut when losing 1-5 to Australia, but then managed to win two important victories against Bahrain and China, helping Indonesia qualify for the fourth qualifying round.
In this round, the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) has invested heavily in a squad of quality naturalized stars from the Netherlands, in order to realize the dream of participating in the World Cup. However, all efforts were ruined when the Southeast Asian representative suffered two unforgettable defeats against Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
After the team missed the World Cup, Indonesian fans and media simultaneously called for the dismissal of coach Kluivert and hoped that Mr. Shin Tae Yong would return to the hot seat.
According to the signed contract, coach Kluivert will lead Indonesia until January 2027 with a salary of about 1 million USD/year, with an extension clause for 1 more year. Currently, PSSI has not officially commented on Mr. Kluivert's future.
However, in case the Dutch coach proactively requests to terminate the contract, PSSI will not have to pay any compensation.
