The UEFA Champions League and its new format brings quite a few exciting clashes and on the first day of the first round of matches, there was the AC Milan - Liverpool match.
Not only have they won the European Cup multiple times, one of their victories has come against their opponents. Liverpool’s comeback in Istanbul in 2005 is one of the most memorable, before AC Milan “paid the debt” two years later in Athens.
That was also the Rossoneri's last win in any of their three European competitions. Things have gone downhill since then against English clubs, with just three wins in 21 games (D6 L12), including two defeats to Liverpool in the 2021-22 Champions League group stage.
The San Siro has also lost its identity as one of Europe's great fortresses, with AC Milan winning less than half of their last 18 home games in European competition (W7 D3 L8).
AC Milan looked even weaker until their 4-0 win over Venezia at the weekend, a result that was much needed by new coach Paulo Fonseca after a three-game winless start to the Serie A campaign (D2 L1).
The opposite can be said of his colleague Arne Slot, who started life on Merseyside with three consecutive wins without conceding, until suffering a huge shock with a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest last weekend.
Now he is tasked with getting The Reds back into the Champions League after their failure in the UEFA Europa League. Liverpool have won four of their last five games in Italy (losing one).
