Serious traffic jam in Binh Thanh district
Currently, traffic jams have become a nightmare for people traveling through Dinh Bo Linh, Ung Van Khiem, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh and Nguyen Huu Canh streets (Binh Thanh district) during the morning and afternoon rush hours.
This is the northeastern gateway area of Ho Chi Minh City, connecting the city center with Thu Duc City and Binh Duong and Binh Phuoc provinces, causing a large volume of traffic passing through here.
In particular, Ung Van Khiem Street, from the Martyrs’ Monument 5-way intersection to Tan Cang Tourist Area, is always in a state of serious traffic jams. Thousands of vehicles often have to queue up, moving slowly through the narrow road, causing traffic chaos.
In addition, the Martyrs' Monument intersection is one of the large and complex traffic intersections at the northeastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City. This is the intersection of many important routes such as Xo Viet Nghe Tinh, National Highway 13, Ung Van Khiem and Nguyen Xi.
Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street, from Hang Xanh overpass to Dai Liet Si intersection, often experiences traffic congestion, making it one of the city's 24 traffic jam black spots.
Saigon River Road – Solution to Reduce Traffic
Faced with this situation, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has proposed building a nearly 4km long road along the Saigon River (from Ba Son Bridge to Binh Trieu Bridge) to create a new route to reduce traffic pressure on the above routes.
The project is divided into 2 sections, of which the section from Ba Son Bridge (District 1) to Tan Cang border (Binh Thanh) is nearly 1.95km long and will be 31 - 35m wide. The section from Saigon Bridge to Thanh Da is 1.98km long and is expected to be 20 - 50m wide.
The total investment capital of the project is expected to be about 3,380 billion VND, with implementation period from 2024 - 2030.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, investing in this Saigon River route to connect to National Highway 13 is necessary, contributing to reducing traffic pressure on Ton Duc Thang, Nguyen Huu Canh, and Ung Van Khiem streets.
This route also creates a new axis connecting Districts 7, 4, Nha Be District with districts and cities in the Northeast region of Ho Chi Minh City.
The construction of this route is part of the overall Saigon riverside road project, connecting Cu Chi district to Can Gio bridge, which has been added to the city's master plan adjustment project until 2040 and vision to 2060.
According to the plan, this riverside route will have a minimum scale of 4 lanes, combined with a separate lane for bicycles and a light rail system from the city center to Cu Chi.
This project not only solves the traffic jam problem in Binh Thanh district but also contributes to completing the synchronous traffic network for Ho Chi Minh City, creating favorable conditions for people's movement and promoting socio-economic development in the area.
