Raphael Varane has announced his retirement at the age of 31. The French centre-back made the decision after suffering a serious knee injury while playing for Como in Serie A.
The player, who joined the newly promoted club on a two-year deal after leaving Manchester United at the end of last season, suffered a knee injury on his Coppa Italia debut against Sampdoria.
At the end of August, Varane was left out of the club's squad for the 2024-2025 season. And as the new season progressed through the first few rounds, the complications of this injury forced him to end his illustrious career.
“In my career, I have faced many challenges, many successes, almost all of which were considered impossible. When I think back on these moments, I am extremely proud and satisfied to announce my retirement from the game we all love,” he shared on Como’s official X account.
“I always hold myself to the highest standards, I want to go out there strong, not just cling to the game. It takes a huge amount of courage to listen to your heart and your instincts. I have fallen and got up a thousand times, and this time, it was time to stop and hang up my boots with the last cup game at Wembley.”
In total, Varane made 480 club appearances during a 14-year career, winning four Champions League titles and three La Liga titles with Real Madrid.
His most recent trophy was the FA Cup with Man United. He has been capped 93 times by France and won the World Cup in 2018.
Varane is expected to stay at Como as a member of the coaching staff.
“I have loved fighting for myself, my club, my country, my teammates and the supporters of every team I have played for,” he added, “From Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and the national team. I have defended every club symbol with everything I have, and have loved every minute of this journey.
I'll be staying in Como. Just no shoes and shin guards. Something I hope to share more about soon.
Now, to the supporters of every club I have played for, to my team-mates, coaches and staff… from the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who has made this journey more special than my wildest dreams could have foreseen. Thank you football.”
