Just a few days after the confrontation in La Liga, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will continue to face each other, this time in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. This is the fifth time the two teams have met in the European arena, of which the previous four times were in the quarter-finals (season 2013-2014 and 2015-2016).
Although Barcelona's late 2-1 victory at Metropolitano last weekend helped them widen the gap to 7 points in La Liga, the knockout nature of the Champions League brings a completely different challenge.
Barcelona showed superior strength in the round of 16 when defeating Newcastle United with a total score of 8-3, including a 7-2 victory in the second leg. Since Hansi Flick took over, they have scored 73 goals in the Champions League - the most among teams.
However, Barcelona's biggest weakness lies in the defense. They have not kept a clean sheet in 13 consecutive Champions League matches - the longest streak in club history in this arena.
Meanwhile, Diego Simeone's team is losing momentum in the La Liga race and is forced to focus all their strength on the Champions League as well as the Copa del Rey.
Atletico's away record in the Champions League against Spanish opponents is very worrying as they have never won (1 draw, 4 losses). They have also not won in their last 6 away knockout matches (1 draw, 5 losses), with the most recent victory being against Manchester United in 2022.
However, Atletico Madrid has only lost one of their last four encounters with Barcelona in the Champions League (2 wins, 1 draw).
