On February 6, Minh An General Hospital (Nghe An) announced that doctors at this medical facility had just performed an esophageal and stomach endoscopy, successfully removing a 5 cm long nail from the stomach of a 15-month-old patient in An Hoa commune, Quynh Luu district (Nghe An).
According to the child's father, on the evening of February 5, the child held two screws to play, but after a while, only one remained. Worried that her child had swallowed the foreign object, the family immediately took her to the hospital.
At the hospital, the child was examined, had an X-ray, and an ultrasound to determine the exact location of the foreign object. Immediately afterwards, the doctors quickly performed the procedure to remove the foreign object from anesthesia. After 15 minutes, the endoscopy team successfully removed a 5-inch-long torsion nail from the patient's stomach.
Doctor Nguyen Dinh Lan - Minh An General Hospital, who directly performed the endoscopy, said: "The process of removing the foreign object encountered many difficulties because the foreign object was smooth, round, and accompanied by food residue, making the operation complicated.
However, fortunately, the patient was discovered and treated promptly. Otherwise, the foreign object could have moved into the intestines, causing many dangerous complications such as intestinal perforation, bleeding, etc. At that time, open surgery would have been required to treat it."
