On January 6, information from Hue Central Hospital said that doctors at the hospital successfully performed surgery to remove a dangerous foreign object in the digestive tract, saving the life of a 26-year-old male patient. This is a complicated emergency case, requiring quick and accurate intervention.
Patient Le Tat V. (26 years old, residing in Xuan Phu Ward, Thuan Hoa District, Hue City) accidentally swallowed a pork bone while eating congee. Due to difficult family circumstances, the patient did not go to the hospital immediately but was admitted after 6 days in a state of severe neck pain, mild difficulty breathing, inability to eat and drink, and swelling and pain in the left neck.
Through clinical examination, CT scan of the neck and esophageal endoscopy, doctors discovered a large bone sample measuring 30 x 41mm with a sharp point located in the thoracic esophagus, with the risk of esophageal perforation and damage to surrounding organs.
Immediately, the patient was transferred to the operating room for rigid esophagoscopy to remove the foreign object under anesthesia.
The surgery lasted more than an hour, with the coordination of the departments of Pediatrics, Abdominal Emergency Surgery, Ear, Nose and Throat, and Anesthesia and Resuscitation. The foreign object was safely removed without causing further damage to the esophagus. After surgery, the patient was transferred to the recovery room for monitoring and is currently in stable health and gradually recovering.
Doctors say that foreign bodies in the digestive tract are a common emergency, especially with large, sharp foreign bodies that have been left for a long time. If not treated promptly, dangerous complications such as esophageal perforation, mediastinitis, damage to large blood vessels, gastrointestinal bleeding or widespread infection can be life-threatening.
Doctors advise people to be careful when eating, especially with foods containing small bones or hard shells. If you experience any abnormalities after eating, you should go to a medical facility immediately for examination and timely treatment. Avoid using unsafe measures such as trying to swallow hard food to push the foreign object down.
