Recycling single-use materials not only helps the environment, but is also a great way to spark children's creativity.
Turning disposable plates into unique tote bags is both educational and helps children develop their craft skills as well as learn about protecting the environment.
To make a bag from disposable plates, parents should teach their children to prepare paper plates or disposable plastic plates, straps, glue, scissors, needle and thread, paint, crayons and stickers. Note, to help increase the durability of the bag, choose plates with tough, durable material so that the bag can be used for a long time.
Once you have everything ready, have your child choose two disposable plates that are the same size. If using paper plates, check to make sure they are not torn or misshapen when making the bag. You and your child can paint or decorate the plates as you like before moving on to the next steps.
Use scissors to cut off the top of both discs to create a semi-circle. The bottom of the disc will be left to form the body of the bag. If you want to create a bag with a flap, you can leave a small portion of the edge of the disc to form the flap.
Once cut, join the two discs together to form a bag shape. Use hot glue to glue the edges of the discs together. If you want to make the bag more durable, you can use a needle and thread to sew around the edges of the discs to ensure they are securely attached. Be sure to leave the top of the bag open to create a compartment for your child to store items.
Once the body of the bag is complete, attach the strap. Use scissors or a hole punch to make two small holes on either side of the disc and thread the strap through. Choose a length that is appropriate for your child’s height. You can tie a knot inside the bag or use hot glue to secure the strap to ensure it doesn’t slip.
The final step is to decorate by using paint, crayons or stickers to beautify the bag according to their creativity. Children can draw their favorite pictures, add colorful stickers or decorate the bag with cotton. This is also a way for children to develop their creativity and shape their own style.
