Phu Quy island district is 56 nautical miles from the mainland with a natural area of 17 square kilometers and a population of about 30,000 people. This locality develops its economy with two main pillars: fishing, fishing logistics, and trade, services and tourism. Although it is an island district, trade union activities here are bustling, from taking care of union members' lives to cultural and sports activities.
Mr. Nguyen Thien Tam - Chairman of Phu Quy District Labor Federation said that currently, the total number of grassroots unions and affiliated unions is 31, including 2 unions. The total number of union members in the entire island district is 1,052 union members/1,055 workers, civil servants and laborers.
With the characteristics of private enterprises on Phu Quy Island mainly operating on a small scale, with relatively few workers (less than 10 workers), mainly working by the hour, without labor contracts, there are not enough conditions to establish additional grassroots unions. However, with many efforts, since the beginning of the year, Phu Quy District Labor Federation has recruited 20 new members in the administrative sector and 11 members in the informal sector.
The work of caring for the lives of union members and workers is well carried out by grassroots unions through many exchange activities, picnics, union meals and sports events.
In addition, it also proposed and was granted funding to support the repair of the "Union Shelter" house for union members who are teachers of Long Hai Primary School with an amount of 20,000,000 VND.
With the characteristics of an island district, fishing is the main occupation here, so the Phu Quy District Labor Federation has also mobilized 16 boats and 115 union members of the Tam Thanh Seafood Exploitation Union to sign a commitment not to fish with explosives or toxic substances, and not to participate in fishing in violation of foreign territorial waters.
