No more renting thanks to the Warm House
On the last day of 2024, the family of Ms. Vu Thi Dung, a worker in the gas meter assembly department of Aichi Denki Vietnam Co., Ltd., hurriedly packed up their belongings and moved to their new house in Quyet Tien 1 village, An Thang commune, An Lao district, Hai Phong.
Ms. Dung has been working as a factory worker for 14 years now, earning more than 5 million VND/month. Her husband is a seasonal worker, earning only about 3.5 million VND/month. Previously, her family rented a room in An Lao. With a low income, rent, tuition for 2 children as well as other expenses, Ms. Dung never thought of having her own house.
“This Tet, my family has a new, warm house, free from renting. Although it is not yet completely finished, for me, having a solid house is an unexpected happiness,” Dung confided.
For Ms. Dao Thi Mai (a semi-finished product worker at Sao Vang Factory, Dinh Vang Company Limited), the newly completed Mai Am Cong Doan house is still like a dream. Because, 3 months ago, Ms. Mai's family of 5 was still living in a dilapidated house with a cement roof, so cramped that there was only room for a bed for the whole family to sleep together. Typhoon Yagi swept through, the roof of Ms. Mai's house was blown off, the walls cracked, and she could no longer live in it.
In response to Ms. Mai's situation, the Hai Phong City Labor Federation assessed and supported 50 million VND, Sao Vang Company Limited supported 80 million VND, the Company's Trade Union supported 3 million VND along with many practical gifts from the Hai Phong Industry and Trade Trade Union... After 2 months of construction, the house was urgently completed so that Ms. Mai's family could stabilize their lives.
In addition to the families of Ms. Dung and Ms. Mai, on the morning of December 17, the Hai Phong City Labor Federation presented funds to support the family of Ms. Vu Thi Thu Mai (teacher at Dong Minh Kindergarten, Vinh Bao). Ms. Mai's situation is difficult as she is a single mother, suffering from a chronic illness, raising 2 school-age children by herself. The cozy 50m2 house is a great source of motivation for Ms. Mai to persevere on the path of fighting the disease and raising her 2 children to adulthood.
Spreading the effectiveness of the Trade Union Shelter Fund
According to Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc - Permanent Vice President of Hai Phong City Labor Federation, over the years, the City Labor Union Shelter Fund has promptly supported union members and workers in difficult housing circumstances, with an average of 60-80 union members receiving support to build new or repair houses each year.
In 2024, the Fund will support 127 disadvantaged workers in need of housing, a significant increase in the number of union members and workers receiving benefits. In addition, it will provide subsidies to 2,220 disadvantaged workers. The total budget to support union members and workers will be nearly VND 8.5 billion, an increase of nearly VND 3 billion compared to 2023.
In 2025, the City Labor Federation strives to support the construction and repair of at least 130 houses for workers in difficult circumstances, including 100 houses for workers in Hai Phong City according to Plan No. 189/KH-UBND dated August 16, 2024 of the City People's Committee on implementing the emulation movement to join hands to eliminate damaged and degraded houses of poor households, near-poor households, and households in difficult circumstances in the city in 2025. Along with that, subsidize at least 3,000 union members and workers in difficult circumstances from the city's "Union Shelter" Fund.
“The city’s trade unions at all levels hope that, through the timely sharing and encouragement from the Trade Union Shelter Fund, union members’ lives will be less difficult and arduous, and they will soon settle down and stabilize their lives. At the same time, we hope that the Fund’s activities will increasingly spread, receiving the attention and support of businesses, union members, and employees to help more union members in difficult circumstances,” said Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc.
